Offloading as an Evolutionary Strategy

This book begins where The Evolving Receiver left off, but it takes a wider shape than the earlier outline allowed. Its subject is energy at three scales — the energy of humans, the energy of the planet, and the energy of the universe — and offloading is the behaviour that runs through all three.

Human evolution is marked by the invention of increasingly sophisticated tools, and it is not much of an error to note that evolutionary progress paralleled those inventions. But the ledger does not stop at the body. The same accounting that governs a twenty-watt brain governs a grid, and the same accounting that governs a grid is a local instance of how the universe spends a gradient. Much as Darwin had to place faith in a living process for which he had insufficient mathematical support, the citizen scientist must learn to trust the capacity to theorize and imagine — and then test what imagination proposes against the ledger.

The work this volume concludes

This is the concluding volume of the sequence, and it carries a specific obligation. An earlier book rewrote the conservation of energy as a relationship rather than a bare bookkeeping identity. That reading is not assumed here. It is put on trial. Each scale — human, planetary, universal — is treated as a test bench: what would the relational account predict, what would a strictly ledger-only account predict, and which observation separates them. The book validates that earlier claim or invalidates it. It is not permitted to leave it undecided.

Themes

Energy before behaviour

Every claim in the book is asked to pay in joules. Degree, quality, and availability of energy are treated as the boundary conditions on any complex organisation, from a twenty-watt brain to a national grid.

Autonomous versus dependent offloading

Extension that amplifies capacity is distinguished from extension that transfers agency. The distinction is the adaptive question at human scale, and it recurs at planetary scale as infrastructure dependence.

The dual tempo

Genetic change is ongoing but generationally constrained; cultural change is unambiguously rapid. The book insists on stating the comparison honestly rather than collapsing the two rates into one story.

Redundancy as objectivity

A fact becomes solid by being copied. Quantum Darwinism supplies the carpenter's manual: repeatability, not magic, is the mechanism by which reality offers resistance.

Conservation on trial

The relational rewriting of conservation of energy from the earlier volume is the defendant, not the premise. Each scale is a test bench, and the verdict must be returned.

The citizen-scientist posture

Theorising and imagining are permitted, then made to answer to the ledger — the same faith in a living process that Darwin had to extend before the mathematics existed to support it.
