Echoes From the Future: Presentiment, Orch-OR, and the Fastest Available Explanation
The strongest claim the volume has admitted for examination, and the cheapest explanation that already covers the data.
State the object first
The full object here is temporal structure in physics, and it is less exotic than the headline suggests. Maxwell's equations, the Schrodinger equation and general relativity are all time-symmetric; the arrow we experience is thermodynamic and statistical, not fundamental. Retrocausal formalisms — the two-state-vector formalism, the transactional interpretation — take that symmetry seriously and describe a system with both a preparation and a post-selection. They reproduce standard quantum predictions exactly. That is the point of them, and it is also their limit: no such formalism permits a signal to be sent backwards, because the no-communication theorem holds in all of them.
So 'information from the future' has a precise status before any experiment is cited. As a statement about correlations in a time-symmetric description, it is respectable and empty of new predictions. As a statement about a signal arriving from a later time, it contradicts a theorem.
The three claims, separated
First, presentiment. The experimental literature reports small physiological changes — skin conductance, pupil dilation, cortical potentials — a few seconds before a randomly selected arousing stimulus, in aggregate. Mossbridge and colleagues' meta-analysis reports a non-null effect; the critical replies identify expectation-bias, randomisation and analysis-flexibility routes to the same aggregate. The state of that argument is genuinely unresolved, and the effect sizes are of the order where unresolved usually resolves toward zero. The honest summary is: a small, contested effect with plausible mundane generators, not yet a phenomenon.
Second, Orch-OR. Penrose and Hameroff's proposal is about quantum coherence in microtubules terminating in objective reduction. It is a claim about the present tense. It does not predict access to future information, and citing it in support of premonition is a category error made frequently and by advocates. Its own status: microtubule superradiance has been observed, which is real and interesting, and the gap between that and orchestrated reduction at cognitive timescales remains many orders of magnitude wide.
Third, the gut feeling itself, which is the only item with no evidential problem. Rapid, non-introspectable pattern-completion is measured, uncontroversial, and fast enough to precede any verbal account of itself by a comfortable margin. It integrates interoceptive state, prior exposure and statistical regularities the reporting system never sees. A decision that arrives complete, before its reasons, is exactly what such a system produces.
Name the discount
The phenomenology is the strongest thing in this chapter and it is evidence for nothing in particular. Knowing before knowing why is precisely how a fast subsymbolic process feels from inside a slow symbolic one. The felt quality of arriving-from-outside does not discriminate between a future echo and a prior the reporting system cannot inspect, and no amount of vividness makes it discriminate.
What the volume can legitimately keep is the vocabulary of anticipation as prediction: a forward model, a prior, a precision-weighted expectation. Those are defined terms with measured referents. What it cannot keep is the promotion of a time-symmetric formalism into a mechanism for premonition, or the recruitment of microtubules to a claim they do not address.
The open baton
The design that would settle presentiment is not another meta-analysis. It is a large, pre-registered, adversarially designed protocol with the randomisation source, the analysis window and the exclusion rules fixed in advance and the sceptics as co-authors, reporting a single pre-specified statistic. That study is cheap by physics standards and has not been run, and the reason it has not been run is sociological rather than technical.
The question the chapter hands on for the null hypothesis is sharper: how early can a non-introspectable prior measurably shift physiology relative to a stimulus whose timing the participant genuinely cannot predict? Establish that ceiling and the presentiment window either sits inside it or does not.

Validity band
The time-symmetry material is exact mathematics with no empirical content beyond standard quantum mechanics. The presentiment material is valid only as a description of an unresolved literature, not as a phenomenon. The predictive-processing null hypothesis holds at the timescales at which non-introspectable priors are measured, which are milliseconds to a second or two, and is not established for the multi-second windows presentiment studies report. No part of the chapter licenses a claim that information travels from a later time to an earlier one.
Falsifier
A pre-registered, adversarially designed presentiment protocol with a fixed analysis plan, run at scale, returning a null. That would close the empirical question in the direction this chapter expects. The reverse would be more interesting: a replicated positive effect at a window no plausible prior can reach, with the randomisation source auditably independent of the participant. Either outcome is decisive, which is why the design and not the interpretation is where the work belongs.
Where this chapter is weakest
The chapter argues for a null hypothesis, and arguing for a null is where confirmation bias is least visible to the person doing it. It also treats a contested meta-analytic literature more briskly than a specialist would accept, and the reader should know that the methodological replies are asserted here rather than assessed. The predictive-processing alternative is offered as cheaper without being shown to reach the reported multi-second windows, which is a real gap and not a rhetorical one. And Orch-OR is dismissed as off-topic for premonition while being left standing as an open question about coherence, which some readers will find too generous and others not generous enough.
