Our students learn so quickly and with such enthusiasm that our major task is to guide the children through exploratory adventures which are not desk bound.

The room

No desks — AI stations and large tables

Our classrooms don't have desks. They have AI stations for proactive focus, and large tables where we gather for art and games and crafts — for lunch and snacks — and for more questions.

Between the experiential joy of sharing music and time enjoying nature, there exists the sharing of all the things the child already knows and wishes to know.

Outdoor time is spent with outdoor guides who help devise and construct journeys, escapades, and recreational games with the students.

What a Socratic guide actually does

Teaching by questioning

The guide's first instrument is the question. Skills and knowledge are not instilled — they are revealed, through careful Socratic questioning, from what the child already carries.

Teaching by example

Guides work alongside students as mapmakers, scientists, writers, artists, and explorers. What the guide models in public is part of the curriculum.

Rigorous observation

In place of standardized testing, guides are trained to observe critically and rigorously, specializing in closely following what each individual student learns.

Responsibility, then assistance

The progress is powerful enough that each student quickly begins taking personal responsibility for themselves — and quickly offers assistance to others when asked.

Goals before tools

We use AI only once we have helped the child set his or her own standards and goals. The tool arrives after the intention, never before it.

The explorer in charge

Guides prepare students by helping them ask wonderful questions, so that the student — not the model — is the explorer in charge of each AI session.

Spotting the drift

An explorer in charge is guided to see immediately if an AI agent drifts into sycophancy, or drifts away from the topic at hand, and to correct course.

Why cheating fails

We keep AI from becoming a crutch for those who would rather cheat, because guides and students learn early that cheating only hurts the cheaters.

What Socratic teaching actually requires

Socratic AI is currently being reinvented as a prompt trick. That is worth saying plainly, because it is the clearest thing separating this method from the field. A questioning prompt is real and useful — it is the portable form of the method, and it holds up over years of solo work. What it cannot supply is a model of the learner's understanding, and without that the questioning collapses into interrogation at whatever level the model happened to guess.

Two published critiques set the boundary. The ASBMB Today account notes that science is already Socratic — models tested in public — but that unmoderated questioning reads as antagonism and can deepen imposter feeling. Dr. Ayman El Tarabishy's ICSB essay adds the structural correction: the productive direction is the student interrogating the AI's output, not the AI interrogating the student.

So four requirements, none of which a prompt provides on its own:

  • Trained facilitators who hold a working model of what each student understands, so questions land above ability rather than beneath or far beyond it.
  • Plausible mechanism over perfect answer — a student who can give a defensible account of how something might work has learned more than one who recites a settled result.
  • Recursive time, which means accepting reduced content coverage. A method that returns to the same question is incompatible with a syllabus measured in topics covered.
  • Questions travelling both directions — the guide or model questions the student to surface an assumption; the student then audits the model's output as a claim needing evidence. Only one direction is asymmetric, and running it alone produces compliance.

Music first

Music as a great code

In early childhood education, music becomes a primary source of knowledge and inspiration, as the young child learns about counting and rhythms and about music as a great code.

A child who learns how to ask questions about music is a child already tuned into the fundamentals of great ideas, great science, great mathematics, and above all great emotional intelligence.

Creative enterprises are accomplished through meetings of the Clan of the Great Spirit Bears, where human bears debate the great ideas and discuss music and science and mathematics.
