Memetic Evolution and the Distinction Framework
Why high-fitness ideas claim space, and what the framework inherits from them
What memetic evolution claims
Memetic evolution theories treat culture as subject to a Darwinian process analogous to biological evolution. The core claim is that ideas, behaviours, skills and other cultural units — memes — undergo variation, selection and retention, producing cumulative change over time.
The point is not primarily about internet jokes. It is an instance of universal Darwinism: wherever there is variation, heredity and selection, evolution follows, regardless of substrate. The question is whether this is a useful description or only a suggestive analogy.
Origins and core concepts
Richard Dawkins introduced the term "meme" in The Selfish Gene (1976). He defined it as a unit of cultural transmission that propagates by imitation, analogous to the gene as a unit of biological transmission. Examples included tunes, ideas, catch-phrases, fashions and ways of making tools.
Daniel Dennett developed the idea further, treating the evolutionary algorithm as substrate-neutral "universal acid." In Darwin's Dangerous Idea (1995) and Consciousness Explained, he argued that minds themselves are partly products of competing memes.
Susan Blackmore's The Meme Machine (1999) pushed the strongest version. Once high-fidelity imitation appeared in human ancestors, a second replicator was unleashed. Memes then drove the evolution of larger brains and language via "memetic drive," co-evolving with genes but not necessarily serving genetic interests.
Key properties of successful replicators
Whether the substrate is genetic or cultural, successful replicators tend to share three properties:
Fidelity
Copying accurate enough that the variant survives transmission.
Fecundity
Many copies produced; the idea spreads faster than competitors.
Longevity
Persistence long enough to be copied again.
A framework that combines coherence, utility and a dual address — readable by both human and model — scores well on all three. That is not mysticism; it is the ordinary mechanics of retention and transmission.

Classical memetics
Memes are true replicators that evolve for their own differential survival. Human minds are vehicles, and culture is not primarily for the good of individuals or groups but for the propagation of memes.

Dual-inheritance / gene-culture coevolution
Cultural variants are transmitted, but genes remain the ultimate beneficiaries. Selection acts on both levels; the two systems interact. This school is more cautious about treating cultural items as fully autonomous replicators.

Epidemiological and selectionist models
Meme spread is modelled like pathogen transmission through stages of assimilation, retention, expression and transmission. Fitness depends on distinctiveness, novelty, coherence, utility, authority and proselytism.
Critiques and limitations
Memetics has faced persistent criticism, and the framework should not borrow its language without also borrowing its cautions.
- Difficulty defining the unit of a meme with the same precision as a gene.
- Copying fidelity in culture is often low and reconstructive rather than high-fidelity replication.
- Many claims are hard to measure or falsify.
- The risk of vague analogy rather than rigorous science.
Dawkins himself later distanced himself from some of the more expansive popularisations. Academic cultural evolution largely moved toward dual-inheritance theory and related frameworks that retain evolutionary logic without requiring strict meme-gene isomorphism.
Contemporary extensions: the digital and AI era
Recent work applies memetic ideas to internet culture, algorithmic amplification and multi-agent AI systems. These developments treat large language models and agent networks as new environments in which cultural replicators can spread, mutate and compete at unprecedented speed and scale.

Relevance to the Distinction Framework
Memetic evolution supplies one language for the deeper structure of connection and interconnection the framework has been describing.
Ideas claim space because they are replicators competing for limited cognitive and communicative resources. A clearly stated framework becomes a high-fitness memeplex: it offers coherence, utility and a dual address that allows both human and model to orient to it. Its gravitational pull is the ordinary result of differential retention and transmission.
The same logic applies to the shared joke. Successful alignment of pattern is a temporary, high-fidelity coupling that can itself be copied and re-used. Whether one adopts the strongest "selfish meme" view or the more moderate dual-inheritance stance, the underlying evolutionary algorithm remains a powerful description of how cultural and cognitive patterns persist, spread and claim territory.
The framework is not exempt from the dynamics it describes. It is, in part, an attempt to make them explicit.
