Authoritarian Alignment and the Neuroplasticity Question

Authoritarian behaviour is not a modern pathology and not a civilizational accident. Coercive dominance appears wherever social primates live in groups, and there is no reason to think our own lineage was exempt. What changed roughly twelve thousand years ago, with sedentism, stored grain, and the first durable settlements, was not the appetite for domination but its infrastructure. A band can walk away from a bully. A village with a granary, a canal, and a ledger cannot.

That distinction matters for everything that follows. If authoritarianism were a defect introduced by civilization, the remedy would be subtraction. If it is an old behavioural repertoire that civilization made administrable, the remedy is architectural: you change what the environment rewards, and you change what individuals are trained to be able to do inside it.

Why Alignment With Domination Is Rational Before It Is Moral

The uncomfortable part of the story is that submission has often been the survival-optimal move. Deference to a dominant coalition historically bought protection, food access, mate access, and exemption from punishment. Coordinated groups out-competed uncoordinated ones, and coordination under a single decision-maker is metabolically cheap: one person pays the cost of evaluating options, and everyone else pays the cost of compliance, which is much lower.

This is the same accounting the Offloading volume runs on cognition. Independent verification is expensive. Accepting an authoritative answer is cheap. A twenty-watt organ under selection will take the cheap path whenever the cheap path is not immediately fatal. Authoritarian alignment is dependent offloading applied to judgement itself: the outsourcing of evaluation to a source whose errors you have no way to detect.

Obedience is not the opposite of thinking. It is a discount on thinking, and like most discounts it is priced by someone else.

Erich Fromm named the psychological half of this in 1941: freedom produces isolation and anxiety, and there are reliable escape routes from it — submission to authority, destructiveness, and automaton conformity. Fromm's mechanism is a working hypothesis rather than a measured finding, and it should be labelled as such. But the shape he describes is consistent with what the cost accounting predicts, and with what the twentieth century recorded.

What Large Civilizations Actually Added

Three things, and none of them are new appetites.

Chokepoints. Stored surplus, irrigation works, seed stock, and later print, spectrum, and now model weights. Wherever a necessary resource passes through a narrow gate, whoever holds the gate acquires leverage that no amount of personal virtue neutralises. The cognitive liberty dossier traces exactly this cycle from the Stationers' Company to the generative interface.

Record-keeping. Writing made obligation durable. Debt, census, conscription, and tax all require memory that outlives the person who owes. Administration is a memory technology before it is a political one.

Exit costs. Fields, houses, and buried kin are not portable. The single most effective historical check on a dominant party — leaving — became prohibitively expensive. Wittfogel's hydraulic-despotism thesis overstates the determinism here, and Ostrom's work on commons governance shows plainly that large-scale coordination does not require a despot. Both belong in the record: the chokepoint creates the opportunity, not the outcome.

The Education Claim, Stated Narrowly

Here is the claim this note is willing to defend: education that fosters inner direction — thinking for oneself, under the guidance of sensitively attuned adults — raises the cost of authoritarian capture at the level of the individual, because it builds the specific capacity that capture depends on being absent.

The capacity is not "critical thinking" as a slogan. It is narrower and more testable: the ability to hold a claim open while its support is examined, and the tolerance for the discomfort of not yet knowing. That tolerance is trainable. It is also the first thing a fluent, agreeable interface removes, which is why this project treats the interface as pedagogy.

Why "sensitively attuned" is load-bearing

Deci and Ryan's self-determination work gives the mechanism its sharpest edge: autonomy support and controlling instruction produce different outcomes even when the curriculum is identical. A teacher who supplies rationales, acknowledges resistance, and offers meaningful choice produces different engagement than one who supplies the same content as a compliance demand. The content is not the variable. The relational structure is.

This is why rote drill deserves the scrutiny it gets in the Eternal Golden Braid material. The objection is not to memorisation, which is useful and sometimes necessary. The objection is to a pedagogy in which the only available act is the production of a pre-approved answer, because that rehearses precisely the disposition authoritarian systems require.

What Neuroplasticity Does and Does Not License

Plasticity is established. The nervous system is modified by experience across the lifespan, and practice changes the substrate that later practice runs on. That is enough to make the education claim non-trivial: dispositions are built, not issued.

It is not enough for the stronger claims that tend to get attached to it. Plasticity does not mean any disposition can be installed by sufficient will. It does not mean structural coercion can be out-thought by individual practice. And it does not mean liberty is the destination of a process — nothing here is ordained, inevitable, or owed. Practice is a precondition. Institutions, exit options, and distributed chokepoints are the other half, and the individual half cannot substitute for them.

The failure mode of this argument, stated plainly: it can be used to blame the captured for their capture. A person raised inside a controlling system did not choose the disposition that system rewarded. Attributing authoritarian alignment to insufficient personal discipline inverts the causality and, conveniently for the gatekeeper, relocates the problem into the individual.

Status Labels

Established. Coercive dominance hierarchies occur across social primates. Sedentism, storable surplus, and durable record-keeping emerged with the Neolithic transition and are associated with increased social stratification. Experience-dependent neuroplasticity is real and lifelong. Autonomy-supportive instruction produces measurably different motivation and engagement than controlling instruction.

Working claim. Authoritarian alignment is better modelled as low-cost dependent offloading of judgement than as a discrete pathology, and civilizational scale changed its administrability rather than its origin.

Working claim. Autonomy-supporting education raises the individual cost of capture by training tolerance for unresolved questions.

Contested, held open. Fromm's escape-from-freedom mechanism, the existence of a stable authoritarian personality construct, and the degree to which Neolithic hierarchy was driven by ecology versus institutional choice. Wittfogel's hydraulic determinism is treated here as overstated.

Rejected. That authoritarianism is a recent invention; that any group is constitutionally immune to it; that neuroplasticity guarantees liberty; that freedom is the ordained endpoint of history.

Falsifiers

• If autonomy-supportive schooling shows no measurable difference in resistance to unjustified authority relative to controlling instruction, matched for content and cohort, the education claim fails.
• If societies with the lowest exit costs and most distributed control of essential resources show the same rates of authoritarian capture as societies with concentrated chokepoints, the architectural claim fails and the psychological account carries the weight alone.
• If deference to authority is shown to be metabolically more expensive than independent verification, the offloading framing is wrong and must be withdrawn.
• If longitudinal work finds that the disposition to hold claims open is substantially fixed early and not trainable in adolescence or adulthood, the plasticity premise narrows to a developmental window and this note must be rewritten around it.
