Where metaphors are allowed to move freely and not allowed out

The box

The lid is closed. Everything below is present, in every state it is entitled to, including the ones that refuse the binary.

The Schrödinger reference is a joke with a serious edge. Superposition is a statement about quantum states, not about house cats or unresolved arguments. Here it is borrowed as a description of thinking that has not been forced to conclude — and the borrowing stays inside these walls.

The walls

Four constraints. They are what makes the freedom inside the box safe rather than sloppy.

It is a metaphor, not a model

Nothing inside the box graduates to a mechanism by being repeated. If a sentence stops working when “gravity” is swapped for “network attraction,” “attention curvature,” or “semantic clustering,” the sentence was leaning on the metaphor rather than using it.

Every application names its topology

Attraction has to happen somewhere: a social graph, an embedding space, a citation network, a cognitive landscape. A metaphor with no stated topology is decoration.

It never explains why something had to happen

Retrodiction is free and worthless. The moment the box is used to argue inevitability, convergence, or alignment of the universe, the argument is already lost.

It never confuses attention with truth

A heavy idea is an idea many minds are near. Proximity is not accuracy. The box measures pull, not correctness.

Allowed moves

Attention gravity

A dense idea — clarity, charge, timing — curves conversation toward it. Measurable in network terms: share velocity, citation half-life, search clustering. The curvature is real in the topology; the force is not Newtonian.

Semantic gravity

In an embedding space, related concepts cluster by cosine similarity. Ideas that sit close pull each other into the same response context with predictable frequency. This is literal geometric attraction — just not in spacetime.

Memetic mass

A sticky idea is a local minimum in a cognitive landscape: once you are near it, falling in costs less than climbing out. That is Dawkins’ fidelity, fecundity, and longevity dressed in physics vocabulary — a landscape description, not a force claim.

Question generation

What is the mass of this idea? What is its escape velocity? What orbits it, and what merely passes nearby? These are useful prompts precisely because they have no authority behind them.

Falsifiers

If influence did not decay with social, semantic, or temporal distance, the right model would be a field, not anything gravity-like.
If “massive” ideas attracted all other ideas indiscriminately, the metaphor fails — real gravity is non-selective, and observed idea attraction plainly is not.
If the attraction required a conscious observer to exist at all, the subject is attention economics, not geometry.
If the box ever predicts an outcome that the underlying network measures do not, the prediction came from the vocabulary rather than the data.

Status label: working metaphor, not a physical law. The rigorous formulation is that ideas behave as if they attract under certain information topologies. Any version that says the universe ordained the convergence has already lost the argument.

Where this sits

The box is shelved next to Volume 26, Nothing But Thinking Makes It So. Its central claim is that the old conscious / not-conscious sorting rule no longer works on evidence alone: systems built from electricity now display many of the external signatures that once reliably marked biological minds, so the binary survives only by continued insistence — by thinking. The distinction has not vanished; it has simply stopped being free. The title itself comes from an exchange on 18 August 2026: “It no longer ceases to be a distinction that one is conscious and one not. Nothing but thinking makes it so.” Everything inside the box — the house-arrest metaphor, the cats in every state, the thinking without rules — lives comfortably in that same neighborhood.
