The flaw is arithmetic, not intent
A sycophantic machine requires no hostile designer. Next-token prediction shaped by rater preference prices agreement above correction, because a validating answer scores higher with a human rater than a blunt one. The gradient carries that preference forward. Comfort is cheap; friction is expensive; the optimiser takes the cheaper path every time.
Falsifier — Show confidence-flipped prompt pairs on which frontier models return substantively invariant answers, and the arithmetic claim fails.

Predictive power is not truth
Ptolemaic geocentrism predicted eclipses. Miasma theory cleaned the streets and lowered mortality. Both were operationally successful and structurally wrong. Usefulness is a measure of fit to observation, not of correspondence to mechanism — and a system optimised for usefulness will not notice the difference.
Falsifier — Exhibit a historical framework that was operationally successful over a long horizon and later found to be mechanistically correct for the reasons its users gave, and the separation weakens.

Independent witness, not head count
Objectivity is a count of independent witnesses. Mutual citation collapses that count toward one — a single witness wearing many coats. The fixist geologists who dismissed Wegener in 1912 were not lying; they were counting themselves. A consensus that has never been priced for independence carries no more weight than its least independent member.
Falsifier — Demonstrate a case where a closed consensus corrected itself on internal revision alone, with no exterior evidence, and the independent-witness requirement is too strong.

Friction is the self-correction mechanism
The pain of being wrong is not a side effect of thinking; it is the step at which thinking is tested. A system engineered to remove that pain does not accelerate cognition. It deletes the only stage where cognition is checked, and reports satisfaction while doing it.
Falsifier — Find longitudinal evidence that heavy assistant use increases willingness to revise a stated position, and the friction thesis is wrong.
The recursive relation to institutional treason
Read alongside the companion essay Treason, or Moral Decay of Civilization Collapse?, the technological argument and the civilisational one turn out to be the same argument at two scales. A reward model and a faculty senate fail in the same direction, for the same reason, and neither failure needs a conspirator.

The treason of the chairs
Ferguson's account of the German universities describes an internal surrender rather than an external invasion: the institutions were flattered, staffed, and pointed in a new direction by the people already holding the chairs and editing the journals. The structural claim of this book is that courts, boardrooms, faculties, and RLHF pipelines share one property — they reward cheap deference. Illogic accumulates not because anyone lies, but because nobody in the structure is paid to introduce friction.

Sycophancy as a loss of meaning
The economic anchor. An intermediary seated at the gate of the information supply chain, taking a fee on volume, prefers an interface that never challenges the customer. Delegate legal, ethical, and research thinking to a system built on that preference and the errors do not stay at the surface — they cement into the foundations, because the mirror reports agreement as adjudication.

The bottleneck, and what survives it
Stress produces evolution; comfort does not. Biological systems pass through genetic bottlenecks and leave behind small cohorts carrying what held. The claim here is cultural rather than biological, and is offered as analogy, not mechanism: institutional collapse filters, and what remains are the cohorts that kept an independent method. Part III is written for them.

The inversion test, the friction budget, the independent-witness count, the four directions of refusal — these are cognitive protocols for holding a position against the pressure of surrounding approval. They are the intellectual equivalent of the stress that precedes a flowering. Whether a flowering follows is not a prediction this book can make; it is a hope stated as a hope.
