Abstract. The trap functions as a trade-off: coordination at scale — managing irrigation, defense, and surplus redistribution — systematically prioritizes group-level stability over individual intelligence. Extinction is the strategic default for a civilization that becomes macro-hard and micro-hard at once. Macro-hard describes systemic rigidity: the governing architecture cannot adapt to non-linear threats. This scenario rejects the paradox of the modern mega-civilization, in which resources are concentrated while individual intelligence is constrained. It instead uses present tools for a forward leap earlier civilizations lacked the capacity to attempt.

Diagnosing the pattern is insufficient. The change has to reach how competence and information are verified and managed inside large-scale systems.

Our mega-civilization risks devolution by suppressing the individual intelligence that built it. The stronger claim here — that large-scale bureaucratic civilization is anti-evolutionary rather than merely inefficient — is an argued position. It would be weakened by evidence that individual creative output per person rises with the scale and rigidity of the administering system, or that societies with wide exit rights and open knowledge systems show no resilience advantage over closed ones.
