VII: Entering the Quantum Paradigm:, Everything Repaid Which Was Owed

Already set — your words from the Introduction

The fiddler now takes to the road,

Knowing everything has been repaid which was owed,

The peddler now speaks

From the back of a fish truck which loads

While my conscious explodes.

— Bob Dylan, Visions of Johanna

Once again, we find ourselves as human beings taking account, considering alternatives, mapping dangerous seas and coastlines, embarking once again into the unknown.

As Shakespeare informed us, nothing but thinking makes it so, and nothing but thinking which exacts such a price.

Here we stand at the inception of an unknown well beyond the scope of all previous unknowns which preceded us - or so it would appear from this parallax identity.

Here we leave behind a familiar territory, one which has stood us in good stead, and which has served to fill our sails over many difficult centuries.

This territory is the advancement of science towards the present, and which we can define as Newtonian mechanics, furnishing us with a reliable set of maps which guided us to this plateau.

Without the measurement and precision and analysis of Newtonian science we simply could not have arrived here at all.

But now that this Newtonian vessel has outgrown its capacity to ferry us to our destination.

The old Newtonian ships have burnt to the waterline and we build a new vessel as we embark upon these now quantum seas.

Because thinking makes it so, we find ourselves creating new ways of thinking, new language and new science and mathematics to serve as our symbols to communicate such thinking

I feel the words of previous thinkers such as Joyce who viewed himself as the “smithy of his race” - a workmanlike phrase to articulate the work of laying down words like bricks to communicate the inexpressible.

I take stock, see the price I pay, and the full debt which has been owed, and which is now fully repaid, as we embark once again into the complete unknown.
