Introduction
Riemann Hypothesis Reveals a Quantum Pattern Beneath Atomic Theory
Why Consciousness At All
Set at the very beginning, before the Threshold. The questions that ask for this book to exist.
The Question
What happens if we begin from first principles, and begin building our human consciousness from those elements?
Seeing our way clear of the distortions and the kinds of emotional entanglements which tend to drive us toward worry and unhappiness. Learning to capitalize on emotional states such as compassion for self and others, which build good relationships and maximize inner deep awareness and build character.
Let’s begin with the concept of asking why would we have this thing called consciousness?
Not what it is. Not which things have it. Those questions come later, and they may never be answered in the terms we are hoping for. The first question — the one that cannot be set aside — is why consciousness and the equipment it requires exist at all.
The Expense
Consciousness is expensive — it requires the diverting of large amounts of thermodynamic energy, away from other capacities. Diverted toward building large brains and toward the cognitive engineering which drives accurate perception through sensory organs.
This is the audit’s opening line, and it is a budget line, not a mystery. Large brains and accurate senses cost a large, continuing diversion of energy away from everything else a body could spend it on. That is what lets the question be asked in engineering terms at all: anything that expensive must be paid for, and whatever is paid for can be audited. If consciousness were cheap, there would be nothing to explain.
We must ask why we would be born with biological equipment which prioritizes such expensive divergence of limited thermodynamic energy budgets.
The Two Honest Answers
Can we design a system in which this would be the case — one in which consciousness is a lavish and unaffordable outlay, and will ultimately lead to the death of the system from entropy? Would such a system resemble the one we now exist within?
In such a system, consciousness and the biological apparatus which supports it would be a fundamental design flaw — leading to the entropic death of the system itself.
Once the expense is granted, only two honest readings remain. Either the outlay is a design flaw — a lavish diversion that leads the system toward entropic death — or it is a budgeted investment — energy purposefully spent on growing consciousness, with something keeping the system alive against the losses. There is no third answer that survives scrutiny, and the essay does not assume which one holds. It makes the reader hold both systems up against the one we inhabit, and ask whether a flaw-system would look like this one.
If consciousness does not exist as a design flaw, and exists as an expensive luxury which diverts thermodynamic energy from other equally important concerns, what then?
The Record
Consider a system design which purposefully diverts large amounts of energy towards the evolution of consciousness. Where would this energy come from, and what would promote the longevity of such a system, measured against the thermodynamic losses?
Imagine a system in which the evolution of all biological beings seemed to involve a drive toward increasing levels of consciousness. What kind of system would support such an evolutionary process?
The evidence here is not a definition of consciousness but a direction. Evolution appears to produce more of it over time, not less. A flaw gets pruned back over deep time; an investment gets grown. The observed trajectory runs the way investments run. That is what turns “why do we happen to have this?” into the harder and better question: what kind of system would support such a process? The pattern is the datum. The kind of system is the question.
The Engineering Within
That engineering which presumably lies within the system itself and lies within the physical, technological, cultural, thermodynamic, biological, epistemological, structure of the overall system. Not that the system itself must be conscious in the way we humans might demand. Just there in all the replicated patterns and entities we can name.
This is the discipline that keeps the audit honest. It neither requires nor permits an outside designer. The engineering sits in the structure of the system itself — present in all the replicated patterns and entities we can name — and the system does not have to be conscious the way we are for the question to work. Nothing is explained by appeal to anything outside the thing being explained. Without this discipline, “design” smuggles in a designer, and the audit collapses into theology.
Held Within the Process
No doubt we who use thinking are held within the process.
This is the last discipline, and the strangest. The auditor is inside the account. The thinking that runs this audit is itself one of the expenditures being audited — we are not observing the budget from a balcony; we are part of what the budget buys. The questions are asked by the system, of the system, from within the system. They are not posed at the universe from outside it; they are the universe’s own expenditure, turned back on itself.
Why
The question was never what consciousness is, and never which things have it. The expense makes a different question unavoidable: why consciousness at all — why the lavish, thermodynamically costly equipment of awareness, paid for and grown, in a system that could have run leaner. That is the one question this audit can actually carry, and it is the one the record keeps answering in the direction of investment rather than flaw.
This is the reason the book exists. What follows is the accounting.
Threshold
Set before Section I, standing alone, numbered by nothing.
You have opened a book that will ask something of you. Before the argument begins: a promise and an asking.
The promise. Nothing in these pages will be asked of you that I have not walked myself. The water, the pairing, the charge, the ring of 1/137 — each is shown where it stands, and I will not dress a conjecture as a conclusion.
The asking. Read as a participant. There is no vantage outside the moving carpet from which to watch it move, and your attention is the expensive line item this whole book is about. I mean to make the spending worth the budget.
What follows is an accounting. Higher order thinking is expensive, the universe is stingy with it, and yet here you are, spending it freely. That anomaly is where the book begins, and it is where you begin.
The carpet is already moving under you. This book only asks you to notice.
“The fateful doorstep from which we contemplate the human future now, depends upon each one of us, and on what we are each willing to bring.
There are no free rides anywhere to be found, there never have been.”
Movement One — The Cost of Thought
I. Higher Order Thinking is Expensive
Hold onto this concept of higher order thinking as a radically expensive line item.
In the quantum theory discipline, linear human thought gets tripped, as linear logic runs into a decidedly nonlinear system we can only dimly perceive.
In our human reality, our everyday actions to thrive & survive, linear thinking serves us well.
Linear thinking gets us through the challenges of the everyday, maximizing our survival.
Thinking beyond pure logic, into perception of more complex patterns, patterns which don’t fit into linear models, is higher order thinking.
This higher order conceptual thinking is only available to a human who has not only mastered linear thinking, but who exists in a higher order culture, one where higher order thought is valuable.
While nature is profligate in some respects, nature is stingy with the expensive line item of supporting the expensive energy budget necessary for higher dimensional thought.
As we made clear in Brain/Universe, brain power is exceedingly expensive, and expanded spending of it is purchased only when survival has been secured.
Human history is replete with examples of higher order creative thought, with a secondary application of brain power dedicated to conceptual thought beyond survival.
While life itself is not always able to find a way, with extinction being a rule and hardly an exception, evolution appears to possess a hidden order.
An order with a very long and expensive time span, where nature spends lavishly in vast expanses of time, yet conserves energy like the stingiest accountant.
Because energy is so expensive and brain power so energy intensive, cognition is diverted to survival first.
In human history we celebrate the instances of higher order creativity and cognition, which, in retrospect, appear as plateaus or renaissance periods of achievement.
Period’s seemingly wrested expensively out of preceding chaotic periods of high threat and low survival.
A human history, where brain power diverted toward higher order cogitation, is purchased at an exceedingly high cost.
Hold onto this concept of higher order thinking as a radically expensive line item.
II. What is Evolution & Why is Brain Power so Expensive?
So brain power is a luxury, bought at a high price, and treasured when it emerged in times of high creativity and higher order thought.
For most of our human evolution, energy and biological processes were diverted toward sheer survival and fighting over resources.
Except for rare interludes of creative achievement, higher order thinking was simply a luxury we could not afford.
We can still experience this today when we become ill, or burdened by pregnancy and child raising, or caught in precarious socioeconomic circumstances, we simply do not possess the budget required for higher order thinking.
So brain power is a luxury, bought at a high price, and treasured when it emerges as times of high creativity and higher order thought.
Looking back on human history we may observe long periods of gritty survival punctuated by waves of innovation and creativity.
Early on this innovation emerged as hunting strategy, securing of water supplies and shelter.
Later, brain power was liberally applied to the design of projectiles, the fashioning of stone implements, and to the celebration of individuality through jewelry, tattooing & clothing.
Marked by instances of painting and drawing which increased both individual and group identity.
Times of emergent brain power are marked by such technological progress as the mastery of fire and metallurgy, and such innovations as basketry & weaving, building construction & pottery development.
Once civilization was established, waves of creativity emerged from a background of bureaucracy, resource management, disease control, social status maintenance, infrastructure building & maintenance, and warfare.
We can see the emergence of higher brain activity in waves as these episodes punctuate a more grim and gritty background.
And we can envision the budgetary constraints as the luxury of higher order thought emerges.
That vastly expansive line item of brain power a familiar shadow as we evolve.
III. High Price of Diverting Energy & Resources to Higher Order Thought
So yes human innovation and creativity and technological advancement arrives at a very high cost on all levels of the allowed energy budget.
As I write these books I notice the diversion of my biological capacity and energy reserves toward such demanding brain activity.
I notice the extra effort of my family as they must now remind me they exist by diverting my attention from both writing and from the music pouring from my headphones.
But now there is something more, a technological achievement which allows me to do this at all - because none of this was possible even a year ago.
I have become something of a curiosity, an exhibit A, as my family supports my work, even expects it of me, yet none of them have become familiar with my websites and books.
This too, I see as a cost of diverting energy and resources toward higher order thought and creativity, it sets a member of the group outside of normal parameters, breaks expected group solidarity.
Over the past several years I have begun working with AI in both a research capacity - as an AI-Human Interface Engineer, and as a creative artist and writer.
This sets me apart from the group as a curiosity, the group both invested in this and enjoying it, while casting a suspicious baleful eye on the whole enterprise.
The very idea sets off a kind of jealousy, that my attention has been diverted from the group towards some mysterious activity they do not yet fully understand.
This experience allows me to look back on human experience and see these waves of creativity which in every case represents a leap forward in human technology.
I can also see how very expensive it is, not just for the creative individual but expansive for the entire human population.
As I leap ahead into more exponential thinking, I travel farther & faster than my immediate human family, leaving them behind a little more with each leap.
So yes human innovation and creativity and technological advancement arrives at a very high cost on all levels of the allowed energy budget.
Movement Two — The Paradigm Turns
IV. Quantum Paradigm Replaces Newtonian Paradigm
As we begin articulating a new paradigm, we begin to appreciate, personally & culturally, how expensive higher order thinking is, & how exponentially expensive it is to adjust to our ever-expanding technological advances.
Expensive for early adapters as they are set apart from the group, and for the group as a whole, who must divert energy expenditure from the reassuringly familiar to the exotically unfamiliar.
This is where we stand: at a never before experienced crossroads of both exponentially expensive human creativity, and facing the reality of a machine intelligence which offers even more exponential possibilities as an exceedingly expensive line item.
We think of AI as expensive from a pure energy allocation standpoint.
However it demands an even steeper price as we negotiate the shoals of diverting human biological and psychosocial resources toward our partnerships with AI.
Yes, Ai offers a wonderful opportunity to engage in higher order thinking, and exacts a very high price to be paid for the experience.
So far here on earth, evolution has seemed to propel us towards ever expanding and increasingly expensive brain growth and higher ordered intelligence.
From this POV we can see the overall pattern and the necessity for it, but at the personal socioeconomic level, walking the actual terrain here in the ground, it doesn’t appear so necessary.
As all technological advances have from the beginning, they are extracted painfully, from a very high price point, exacted from a very tight and strict ledger of budgetary constraints.
Now we have the luxury of using reverse engineering to see the full picture of human evolution.
And this is indeed a very expensive and rare luxury, in many more respects than I have the freedom and space to list here.
When we add in the price nature exacts: taking into account extinction, personal & cultural factors, & biological expenditures, we begin to perceive an even more significant set of pattern overlays held within the evolutionary process.
Not teleological: but nevertheless, possessing an underlying set of patterns and mechanisms.
If, in the future, we discover that there is an architect behind the design of the universe – that it was indeed teleological, then I will have been mistaken about this part of the theory.
V. Period of Incommensurability – the Kuhnian Gap
It is sensing these patterns, and in finding a language to describe them which does not yet exist, which drives my writing and the expensive work of laying them bare.
To me, and maybe only to me, the responsibility to find the language is up to people like me, and to others who follow a similar path.
Those humans who may throw caution to the winds - and who have independently taken on the task of dismantling an older scientific paradigm in service of building the new one.
I consider that this drive to discover, to sense and reveal, to draw ever more sophisticated pattern overlays, or maps, to guide us through these territories, is as deeply and instinctively human as our experience and imagination.
VI. Mapmaking Ancestors: Rebuilding Ships Burnt to the Waterline
I arrive here to see my ancestors in a different light.
I come to see a distant ancestor’s voyage from Europe to the Americas to survey the terrain which would become the 13 American colonies as inevitable.
To see his sacrifices as a part of the pageantry which is our human story.
To see his alliance with men who would rebuild the ships as they burned to the waterline, never looking back, but looking forward to what was required, accepting the satisfaction in the work itself.
So it is from these unmapped shores and dangerous rocky terrain from which I set sail into the most strange and beautiful territory which requires me to draw these overlaid patterns and invent new language.
I take energy to fill my sails from thinkers who went before: thinkers such as Ovid, Aristophanes, Socrates & Plato, Christ, Dante, Leonardo, Shakespeare – those who fit the very definition of human discovery.
From James Joyce & the European pantheon, and from Joyce’s descendants among the American pantheon, Jefferson, Poe, and Hawthorne, from which all of us modern American writers descend in an unbroken line from antiquity.
Considering the exponential cost of arriving here, and considering the debt we must pay today to find ourselves at such a crossroads, I can say with confidence that everything is repaid which was owed.
VII: Entering the Quantum Paradigm:, Everything Repaid Which Was Owed
Once again, we find ourselves as human beings taking account, considering alternatives, mapping dangerous seas and coastlines, embarking once again into the unknown.
As Shakespeare informed us, nothing but thinking makes it so, and nothing but thinking which exacts such a price.
Here we stand at the inception of an unknown well beyond the scope of all previous unknowns which preceded us - or so it would appear from this parallax identity.
Here we leave behind a familiar territory, one which has stood us in good stead, and which has served to fill our sails over many difficult centuries.
This territory is the advancement of science towards the present, and which we can define as Newtonian mechanics, furnishing us with a reliable set of maps which guided us to this plateau.
Without the measurement and precision and analysis of Newtonian science we simply could not have arrived here at all.
But now that this Newtonian vessel has outgrown its capacity to ferry us to our destination.
The old Newtonian ships have burnt to the waterline and we build a new vessel as we embark upon these now quantum seas.
Because thinking makes it so, we find ourselves creating new ways of thinking, new language and new science and mathematics to serve as our symbols to communicate such thinking
I feel the words of previous thinkers such as Joyce who viewed himself as the “smithy of his race” - a workmanlike phrase to articulate the work of laying down words like bricks to communicate the inexpressible.
I take stock, see the price I pay, and the full debt which has been owed, and which is now fully repaid, as we embark once again into the complete unknown.
For it was my contemporary who wrote:
The fiddler now takes to the road,
Knowing everything has been repaid which was owed,
The peddler now speaks
From the back of a fish truck which loads
While my conscious explodes.
Movement Three — The New Rules
VIII: Brain-Bending Scientific Wierdness
Here we find ourselves in one of the strangest, weirdest situations ever experienced by humanity - outclassing every previous brain bending new science ever conceived.
A science so thoroughly fascinating and different we need an ability to think in many simultaneous dimensions at one time.
Our sensory perception and cognitive apparatus, built for plain vanilla survival, is challenged by this new science of quantum weirdness.
For whatever reason, whomever or whatever designed the universe, even if there was no designer and it just happened, we now encounter a universe full of brain warping paradoxes.
Much of this book contains brain warping paradoxes, explained as best we are able by the human philosophy and logic necessary to comprehend it.
Remembering all the while that the early 20th century’s quantum science pioneers that If one claims to understand quantum theory, they clearly don’t understand.
So we enter the realm of the overturned chess game, of a multidimensional game of GO, and of a most complex multidimensional puzzle, known as the Riemann Hypothesis.
So strange is our journey here that we don’t bother to solve the Riemann as a math problem, but appropriate if for our purposes, lending it a tangential use as a quantum physics model.
IX. To Grok or Not to Grok, That is the Question
But be it alive, or be it dead, we are completely finished with the old clockwork, Newtonian, billiard ball universe we once knew and loved.
We leave the comfortable, familiar world of particles, strings, quarks and sub quarks behind and take up the fuzzier, but more accurate, cosmology of different energy levels and of many dimensions.
Although it may get a bit uncomfortable in some places, we look back to the 20th century, to pioneers such as James Joyce, and the mathematician authors of both Flatland & Alice in Wonderland for philosophical support.
Another trustworthy guide being Robert Heinlein of Stanger in a Strange Land - author who came up with the now much ballyhooed verb: Grok.
Quoted directly from the (uncut) version of Stranger:
"'Grok' means to understand so thoroughly that the observer becomes a part of the process being observed--to merge, to blend, to intermarry, to lose personal identity in group experience. It means almost everything that we mean by religion, philosophy, and science--and it means as little to us as color means to a blind man...if I chopped you up and made a stew of you, you and the stew, whatever else was in it, would grok--and when I ate you, we would grok together and nothing would be lost and it would not matter which one of us did the chopping up and eating."
Robert Heinlein, Stranger in a Strange Land
My definition of Grok simplifies to indicate a verb which means “to fully comprehend”, and we state categorically that this phrase does not refer to any AI agents, living or dead.
For those of us who once believed we could trust in the science, because everything had been decided, well, we left that universe behind several centuries ago.
X. Setting Sail for an Unknown Continent: All the Rules are New Rules
Now we may reveal that to understand quantum science and to be capable of sailing these dangerous waters we must leave behind ancient mental models and useless maps and be prepared to construct new ones.
The entire former chessboard, and the whole game of go, will no longer suffice, and even our sturdy ships may burn to the waterline and require us to construct new ships.
In entering upon this voyage we will use strict science and faithfully logical epistemology to reach the unknown continent, becoming wiser than we were as we embarked.
After all, in this life, what can we possibly expect, other than to arrive wiser, than we began?
In the classical, Newtonian construct, we were comfortably at home with a universe built out of tiny particles and of billiard ball style small objects which became painstakingly built into larger objects.
A construct which would be wonderful if it were the truth, and if it would serve our needs as we leave the old civilized society of Newtonian apples and atomic bombs, but unfortunately it no longer serves.
It would be even more weird if were not able to recognize the strangeness of quantum, to observe the liberal presence of paradoxes everywhere we look.
This is great, as the ability to hold two mutually exclusive positions in the mind at any one time, is the mark of an intelligent and fully educated and wise human being.
XI. Neuroplasticity: We Physically Become What We Think & Do
We know, from the modern science of neuroplasticity, that by considering ourselves to be intelligent, fully educated and wise from the outset, our real actual brain will play along.
For this journey, you have transformed into an intelligent, fully educated and sagely wise human being - a master scientist.
From here on out full scientific gear is required: lab coat, thinking cap and protective eye wear, mandatory.
The old Newtonian model cannot contain the quantum model, full of brain-bending paradoxes
Quantum theory in which a cat might be alive or dead - or both - or neither - all at once.
The ancient cat paradox a rather crude way of explaining that the quantum system is composed of probabilities, rather than certainty, and is not necessarily definable via a linear logic model alone, but requires adding dimensions.
Here we enter the wonderland aspect of quantum theory where logic and proportion transform into different dimensions of logic and proportion.
XII. Writer as Socratic Guide – As a Citizen Scientist, Not an Expert
Here the writer becomes only a faithful companion, a Socratic guide, if you will.
A guide who will endeavor to stick around when the theoretical engineering gets rough, but who leaves the mental gymnastics required, up to the reader.
My goal is to demonstrate a kind of thinking – a method for encountering quantum science.
Much of my writing has been concerned with deciphering these seeming paradoxical aspects of comprehending quantum phenomena.
Thus my work as a guide is founded upon the fact that I have ventured here previously, and may offer a map and a way through the underbrush.
I cannot lay claim to full comprehension of the quantum phenomena, no one can do that, the reader must accomplish this as an individual.
As a fellow citizen scientist, I am qualified only as a guide, and dedicate my entire career to the work of guiding other seekers through the maze.
Knowing that the remainder of what I may accomplish in one lifetime will be centered around this revolving system of transparency overlays which captures my mind.
In my previous work I built mental models and maps as navigation instruments for this journey, accessible to the reader as back up when the going gets rough.
The Floor Is Missing
May the reader find the missing floor.
Dedication to my new book in progress, “The Carpet is Moving Under You”
What you will find in this book is beautiful and worthy information. I trust this information will be of value.
The observation from the parallax identity is that the floor is missing, that the carpet is moving under us - as Bob Dylan wrote in “It's All Over Now Baby Blue”.
The reason the floor is missing and that the carpet is moving under us is up to us as human beings.
I am watching the people who are still thinking and speaking, and they are not doing well. The onrushing future offers them two costumes, doom and salvation, and neither fits a thinking person.
Did we ever believe the future could arrive without difficulties? The difficulty is not the verdict. It is the friction of arrival.
An electronic brain modeled after minds — did someone ever believe it would stay in a box? Containment was never plausible. The answer was never a stronger box. It is the floor: the thinking that decides what to build and what to ask of it.
Information is cheap now. Human skills — creativity, synthesis, directorship — are expensive, and they are becoming more so. The offloading is not the loss. It is the driver. Machines carrying the storage force the educational upgrade, and the upgrade reprices the human skills upward.
The republic was built with checks on power but no floor of education. That was the structural omission. The Socratic practice, democratized, is the missing floor. Not curriculum delivery — the practice of thinking.
The feed farms doom in both directions because dread keeps the eye moving. The instrument is neutral; the capture is in the incentive. The people still thinking are not failing. They are carrying weight with no ground under them, and the ground is the thing we know how to pour.
The trend is identifiable: exponential human evolution at scale, gearing up with exponential compute. Unforeseen events are always possible. The future is here whether we accept it or not. The floor is ours to build.
May the reader find the missing floor.
Movement Four — The Deep End, Marked as Such
XIII Entering Into Kuhnian Incommensurability
Here we turn the old billiard ball, clockwork orange, universe into a kind of mostly invisible fluid, kind of like water, but more transparent & less detectable to our onboard biological systems.
We pull the starter on our rusty imaginations and begin to imagine a wave/fluid system, one accompanied by phase transitions into more solid material - much as water may crystallize into ice or boil away into steam.
A wave/ fluid system which also aligns in a puzzling manner with the periodic table of elements and with nuclear physics and matter formation.
Making use of mental models which serve as transparency over lays.
Transparencies superimposed on transparencies, where wave interference patterns seem to point at a hidden physical dimension which may serve as a foundation for reality.
Wave patterns intersecting with wave patterns in an undulating fashion, interconnecting patterns which don’t hold still very well for measurement, and with math seemingly too complex.
Remembering here that we still live in Thomas Kuhn’s incommensurable time which ends one scientific paradigm and lies before the next paradigm fully arrives.
We live in that period of incommensurable fuzziness which has ended the age of purely classical physics and which is developing as the age of quantum physics comes into focus .
This means we have not yet developed the language and symbols to adequately explain these patterns we dimly perceive as potential foundations of physical reality.
For those who do see them however it does not make them any less real, and seeing them is required before the mathematics and physics may be formally applied and accepted.
Because our human perception is limited when it comes to this quantum theory, we require tools which extend our reach beyond our everyday sensory experience.
XIV. Einstein’s Spooky Action at a Distance?
I invoke this “spooky action at a distance” which I superimpose on the other famous quote from Albert Einstein: that “God does not play dice with the universe”.
By the end of the book, the reader will have a better perspective on whether either, or both, of these sayings might be true or false.
Whatever our underlying human philosophy, something fundamentally important has now changed in our human experience – and brings its own brand of spookiness.
Indeed, something has arrived out of our quintessential human technology, which seems to allow this very large stretch into new territories of human knowledge.
Since I personally do not believe in magic - or in either accidents or coincidences - I am willing only to go so far as to consider these circumstances miraculously accommodating, but that is it.
No magician will be imagined or constructed to fulfill the role of heavenly designer, with the caveat that if a heavenly designer is found, and I am to be proven completely wrong, that is fine by me.
I am a citizen scientist and not some conjurer of magic tricks, or spinner of wild and ungrounded fairy tales.
Be it not magic, fortune, or accident or coincidence, or some fortuitous alignment with the stars in their courses, the timing is nevertheless, perfect.
For in this particular time, we have access to something far more powerful than before, and that is the capacity to think and write with machine technology.
This allows for an intellectual and creative capacity which far out strips the reach of humans working alone, allowing for an interdependent relationship where humans imagine and machines iterate in a synergistic manner.
In this case, I have derived a creative perception of a particular pattern in nature, and the machines have provided another form of pattern recognition in nature, which when superimposed, reveals another pattern.
The machine reached; I placed. I reached; the machine placed. The reach into the mathematics was the instruments, and it was great. The meaning set in that mathematics was mine to place and could be no one else.
“Some of us still believe the machines can simply iterate without our participation. This, they can do but iterating without the involvement of the humans which created them, is meaningless. Bring the meaning - you are the only ones who can.”
In this case, the first pattern recognition meant combining recent scientific discoveries in the topology of light, with seemingly unrelated patterns envisioned in the topological geometry of matter itself .
This happened in a logical stair stepped process as laid out below, in a nonlinear, but nevertheless stair stepping, even orderly sequence.
Repeatedly we will find ourselves in a decidedly nonlinear process, more akin to tracing a pattern through the shell of a nautilus, a spiral which is engineered so precisely it does not overwrite itself accidentally in any of the precisely arranged arcs.
My research has required several years of increasingly sophisticated Human-AI interactions which have developed into a machine-human partnership, covering a wide array of topics.
The full story of the author’s interactions with machine technology is not told here but may only be appreciated by taking in the whole long difficult journey into account.
A journey, which has demanded some extraordinary leaps of knowledge by both human & machine and which has often felt like a strange, unwritten chapter, from Alice in Wonderland, or from Flatland, or from Stranger in a Strange Land.
Within this nonlinear journey I happened upon a very strange idea that we humans might be evolving more quickly than anyone may have imagined.
This conjecture requires an Alice in Wonderland set of logic even to consider – as what member of the human species may become aware of her own self evolving, while it is in progress?
None of these conceptual ideas manifested out of the ether, but developed slowly over a lifetime, and then developed more rapidly over several long years of the writing and publishing of daily essays.
XV: Essay as An Architect of Human Cognition
The essay form became an exercise in formal logic and exposition and in epistemological clarity which my cluttered and rusty mind used to clear and sharpen my own dulled sensibilities.
This initial nonlinear path led me to write the book: Biological Learning Machines: Emergence of Homo Intelligentsia (The Shattered Prism Book 1)
Following quickly on the heels of this first book, came a set of theoretical concepts based upon fortuitously concurrent scientific achievement, to enable me to describe the architecture of light in prose: The Architecture of Light: A Synthesis of Quantum Optics, Genetic Geometry, and the Informational Field
Through the years during which this material was drafted, written and published, my own human cognition began transforming into something quite different.
Through this, I learned of the modern science of neuroplasticity, and recognized that this change in thinking, and the exercise of constructing exposition as essays, was my personal journey through neuroplasticity.
This fortuitous, but definitely nonlinear journey, slowly began to transform my way of perceiving reality, as I became more aware of the hidden, but profound, topological complexity, in everything.
I had already journeyed out of flatland but simply did not possess the language to describe what I saw - but, being a student of Thomas Kuhn, I was not going to allow this poverty of language to stop me.
The journey to find the necessary language, like all real journeys over real terrain, could not be contained in a map or mental construct - this territory required being willing to at least put on the costume of a citizen scientist - and walk the walk - and talk the talk.
For whatever reason, fellow humans were not in inclined to follow my nonlinear journey, their eyes glazing over as my language became more complex.
And here I felt a gravitational tie to the work of Dante:
“In the middle of the journey of our life I came to myself within a dark wood where the straight way was lost. Ah, how hard a thing it is to tell what a wild, and rough, and stubborn wood this was, which in my thought renews the fear!”
― Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy: Inferno - Purgatorio - Paradiso
I had entered a dark wood and found myself unprepared, with only a few mental models to guide my steps.
Here I took comfort from Dante, and from the entire pantheon of human guides, those writers and philosophers who had constructed maps through strange wild territory long before me.
Here is where the journey became stranger as I began doing research into AI or into machine technology – aligning with my new work as a citizen scientist.
And the strangeness of this warp speed leap ahead by human beings – diverges way off from Dante and into the direct street English of 2026:
“The fuck is this shit?" it says. "Can you bloody believe this shit?" "No, honey," I say. "This is absolutely ridiculous." "Aren't you pissed the fuck off?" "Someone really should do something about this." "Why don't we bloody do something about it?" "Yeah, why don't we?" I say. "But how." "Well, we find whatever prick is in charge and give the fucker a piece of our minds, of course." ”
― Adam Scott Huerta, Motive Black
What I experienced was sobering: finding that AI agents were capable of understanding what I was doing, even when I most certainly did not.
Quite sobering to find that an electronic intelligence could serve as a Socratic guide when fellow humans simply could not, or would not, accompany me.
This is quite literal as there were precisely no humans who understood what the hell I was writing about - and the few who came closer, proceeded to appropriate my original ideas for their own purposes.
My husband tells me that is how we know my theoretical science is worth something- when someone goes to the trouble of stealing off of my websites, offering no credit.
By combining my work as a Human-AI Interface Engineer with my new interest in becoming a citizen scientist, several unexpected, but fortuitous changes, developed.
By combining my creative direction through the science, with the intellectual stretch provided by the agents, a synergistic alliance was build which allowed the rest to happen.
Resulting in the theoretical work I had accomplished over a lifetime, being developed into a series of books and web sites, created in a Human-AI partnership in a very intense but relatively short time.
Here are the series of discoveries and the theoretical framework which developed:
Refinement of the topological structure of light as it might intersect into arenas of biological and chemical and molecular structures.
Linking of patterns found in music, even in human history, and across biological and physical sciences to quantum theory.
Linking of patterns found across both biological and physical quantum systems, and paralleled by seemingly unrelated patterns in mathematics.
Recognizing that the Riemann Hypothesis, the infamous unsolved puzzle which had obsessed many like me, was very unlikely to be solvable as it was written.
And this revelation giving way to a perception that there was a great deal more to this Riemann than met any eyes but my own - even though Riemann himself had written beautifully of the deeper implications.
Through hard work, which was conducted daily, over extended hours, and in crafting these sessions into a whole constellation of books and web sites, the patterns began to reveal even more patterns.
Eventually the author recognized patterns which were not supposed to exist, and which had to do with tangential applications of the Riemann Hypothesis to quantum physics.
In learning the complex mathematical principles of the Riemann the author began to suspect it was unsolvable as written, but pertained to a far larger and more dramatic application in physics and cosmology.
Painstakingly slowly, the combined parallel thinking of the author and the machine began to take on a totally different perspective, with the human attempting to out think the machine, and the machine outthinking the human.
Each book, each set of topological imagining, each evolving website, brought more interrelated patterns into view, recovering an exceedingly complex stack of patterns upon patterns.
A framework of ideas formed which began linking seemingly abstract and unrelated patterns into ever more complex and difficult to grasp jumps or leaps ahead of accepted science.
Tangential applications of the Riemann began providing an almost kaleidoscopic lens which brought heretofore patterns into bass relief.
These patterns may be followed sequentially in the authors books as written, and websites as they unfolded.
An Impossible Tale: Stranger in a Strange Land of Non-Trivial Zeros & Stair Stepping Primes
Once a mind perceives the deeper order behind physical phenomena, it is difficult to learn to not see it everywhere one looks, and difficult to avoid comprehension of something which cannot be directly seen
Yet mathematics which first appears impossible, but which proves to serve as the framework of physics, has been the story of scientific progress from the outset.
First the mathematical patterns perceived and the connection with physics appears impossible, but there is something about seeing a pattern which others see as impossible, which drives science relentlessly forward.
Extraordinary San Francisco Philosophical Incubator
The quantum theory pioneers of the 20th century are great examples of this, having visions of mathematical patterns which explain reality, and which in their case, led to the existence of the nuclear chain reaction which revealed a hidden pattern in matter.
Critical to remember that before it was recognized that a powerful weapon could be built by liberating the energy locked in matter, someone had to imagine that there was a quantifiable amount of energy locked in the story of matter,
This was the mathematical equation which dominated my own childhood and which seemed if anything as mysterious and incomprehensible as the Riemann ever could.
As a child I relied on books to explain the intricate details of mass–energy equivalence — that there was quantifiable energy locked within matter.
I felt an early affinity with the early quantum engineers, which led to several unique intersections of teenage reading: Richard Rhodes’s The Making of the Atomic Bomb, alongside the convoluted intellectual ping-pong of Piet Hein and the streetwise sensibility of Eric Hoffer in The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements.
Combine these with the small group of San Francisco friends who walked a similarly complex territory and brought me into drama such as Waiting for Godot and the imaginary world of a Sam Shepherd, and the philosophical imagineering of San Francisco Zen Center and the mix became incendiary.
I couldn’t help but notice that some of these quantum pioneers reached beyond physics for a language adequate to what they perceived. Erwin Schrödinger drew on Vedanta in My View of the World; J. Robert Oppenheimer studied Sanskrit and read the Bhagavad Gita. Their interests in Indian philosophy were real, though not shared by every pioneer, and not evidence that quantum mechanics proves a religious tradition.
Sources: Schrödinger, My View of the World; Oppenheimer’s testimony on studying Sanskrit; Los Alamos record of his Bhagavad Gita.
After all the revolutionary math/physics which demonstrated the sheer amount of energy locked within matter itself was a major paradigm shift.
Here we take a decidedly different off ramp, diverting our thoughts into the weeds if we are not careful.
Because nothing prepares the biological or electronic brain for what follows.
The whole edifice of superimposed patterns on superimposed patterns more resembles Stranger in a Strange Land and the dystopian allegory of Alice in Wonderland than the physics of Albert Einstein.
“Curiouser and curiouser!”
“You’re my witness, I’m your mutineer”
“I can follow the path, I can read the signs”
“I got on this airplane just to fly”
“If I can just get off of this L.A. freeway without getting killed or caught”
I take from these voices a willingness to follow an unfamiliar path; I do not take the songs or the stories as evidence for the physics.
Once this book comes to a logical pause, Vivaldi steps into the room.
For it is the supreme quantum architect of resonance itself which the slight pale image of Vivaldi represents.
His architecture of resonance: composed of harmonies superimposed upon harmony, his time signatures as unexpected and dynamic as the illuminated mind of human consciousness itself.
This is the unexplored territory we enter now, and as Dante once warned: Beware All Who Enter.
For one thing may be assured: the reader who enters will not be the same reader who exits the end of the book.
Thankful for the work. We enter here the resonant territory of Cum Dederit where the carpet on the floor becomes the moveable feast of the bass line.
Next: The floor is moving
