Culture does demographic work
It is easy to treat culture as the part of human life that happens after biology has finished. Argument, taste, politics, religion, platform: the noisy surface above a slow substrate. On that reading, culture is what we talk about because it is what we can see, and biology proceeds beneath it on a schedule of its own.
The reading is wrong in a specific and measurable way. Culture decides who meets whom. It decides who marries whom, who has children and how many and when, which stresses a body carries across its reproductive years, which foods and chemicals and hours and light regimes a nervous system is assembled inside. Every one of those is a demographic variable, and demographic variables are the raw inputs of population genetics.
Assortative mating is the clearest case. When partners are chosen along an axis — education, ideology, occupation, faith, information habitat — the axis becomes a partial barrier to gene flow. It does not have to be a wall. Population structure emerges from statistical tendencies, not from prohibitions.
Weather and climate
What is visible in the present is weather. It is fast, loud, argumentative, and largely self-describing: each side of every divide has an account of itself and of the other, updated hourly. Attention is fully absorbed by this layer, which is what the layer is designed for.
Underneath, something slower accumulates. Allele frequencies drift within culturally sorted subpopulations. Regulatory settings are laid down by shared environments — shared sleep patterns, shared arousal levels, shared chemistry. The distribution of stress physiology shifts. None of this announces itself. It has no news cycle.
This is precisely the asymmetry described one level down in the tunneling chapter: the operative mechanism is beneath perception, and the consequence eventually becomes phenotype. Phenotype eventually becomes culture again — a population with a different stress baseline produces a different politics — and the loop closes without any participant experiencing it as biology.
STATUS — Model. Gene–culture coevolution is a standard and well-developed field; the specific claim that current sorting is producing measurable structure on a decadal timescale is this arc's proposal and is addressed empirically in Chapter Nine.
When culture outruns generations
Gene–culture coevolution has a characteristic behaviour when the cultural clock accelerates past the generational one: culture begins to preempt genetic adaptation. A problem that would formerly have been solved by differential survival is solved instead by a technology, an institution, or a practice, and selection never gets to act on it.
Lactose tolerance is the standard illustration of the older pattern — a genetic adaptation to a cultural innovation, taking millennia. The modern pattern is different. Refrigeration, antibiotics, eyeglasses, insulin, air conditioning, and contraception all remove selective pressures faster than any allele could respond to them, and each creates new conditions selection has never met.
The result is not a species that has escaped evolution. It is a species whose evolutionary pressures are now overwhelmingly cultural in origin, arriving faster than the slow clock can answer, and being met in the first instance by the fast regulatory layer described in Chapter Two.
The cost of treating culture as commentary
If culture is a causal input rather than a description, then any account of human biological change that treats it as commentary will systematically underestimate the rate of change. Not by a little. The error compounds, because the input that is being ignored is the fastest-moving one in the system.
This has a practical edge. Cohort studies that control for culture as a confound — adjusting it away to get a clean look at biology — are adjusting away part of the causal pathway. The methodological problem is real and not easily solved, and it recurs in Chapter Nine as a reason why the effects this arc predicts are hard to detect even if they are present.
The chapter's claim, stated at its narrowest so that it can be argued with: present-day cultural divides are not only social phenomena. They function as sorting mechanisms with demographic consequences, and demographic consequences are biological ones.
