Why the American case is useful
The United States is a useful working case for the divergence–convergence dynamic, and it is worth being clear that useful is not the same as exceptional. Three features combine unusually there: high and rising cultural polarization, unusually rapid technological adoption, and a founding mythology that every faction claims as its own inheritance.
That combination produces something close to a natural experiment. The polarization supplies the sorting axis. The technological intensity supplies the environmental novelty — screens, chemistry, work patterns, sleep disruption, engineered arousal. The shared mythology keeps the population legally and linguistically unified while it sorts, which means the sorting happens sympatrically, inside one legal and economic system, rather than through separation.
As a first-in-class citizen-science subject, that is close to ideal. The sorting is documented in unusual detail, the records are public, and the population is large.
What the sorting looks like
Interstate migration has acquired a political signature: people move toward places that match their values, and the moves are increasingly reported and measured that way. Marriage patterns show strengthening correlation across political and educational lines. Occupational and educational sorting concentrates specific exposures — night work, sedentary work, physical work, chemical work — in populations that increasingly do not intermarry.
Then the environmental axis. Screen hours, artificial light after dusk, ultra-processed food fractions, ambient chemistry, commute stress, interruption frequency, and sleep debt are all unevenly distributed and increasingly distributed along the same lines as the cultural sorting. That is the condition under which cultural difference becomes regulatory difference: not because culture reaches biology directly, but because culture allocates exposure.
STATUS — Migration, marriage, and exposure sorting are documented in the demographic literature. The inference that they combine into detectable biological structure is a prediction, not an observation.
Two trends at once
While national sorting proceeds, global systems continue enforcing convergence on other axes. Supply chains standardize diet. Platforms standardize attention architecture. Medicine standardizes intervention. Finance standardizes work rhythm. The result is a population becoming more internally differentiated on some traits and more globally homogeneous on others, simultaneously.
This is not a contradiction; it is the ordinary behaviour of a multi-level system. But it is the condition under which structure accumulates unnoticed, because any single measurement can be read as evidence for either trend depending on which axis it happens to have sampled.
It also means that arguments about whether humanity is converging or diverging are usually not disagreements about facts. They are disagreements about which axis is being discussed.
The error to avoid
Reading this chapter as prophecy about a nation's fate is the failure mode, and it needs to be named rather than hedged. Nothing here predicts a split, a decline, a reckoning, or a destiny. Sorting pressure is not outcome. A pressure describes what is being pushed on; it says nothing about whether the structure yields, and human institutions have absorbed comparable pressures repeatedly without the biological consequence arriving.
There is a second error, subtler and more common in this territory: treating the observation of divergence as though it licensed a judgement about which side of the divide is better adapted. It does not. Differentiation is not ranking, and a population that has drifted on stress physiology or immune threshold is not thereby superior or inferior to one that has not.
The chapter's actual claim is narrow. Policy that shapes who lives near whom, under what stresses, and with what exposures is acting on a biological variable whether or not it uses that language. That is a statement about causal pathways, and it can be checked.
