The Quadrillion Witnesses

The non-human aperture on a quantum world, and why rewilding is a measurement problem

Almost every observation ever made of this planet was made by something that was not a person and did not report back. Bacteria sampling redox gradients in sediment, phytoplankton tracking a photon flux, a moth resolving a few molecules of pheromone across a kilometre of moving air, a bird holding a heading through overcast: each of these is a measurement, taken continuously, by hardware that owes us nothing.

This essay extends The Rewilding Correction in a specific direction: not what we owe the non-human world, but what it knows, and what kind of access to physics it represents that our instruments do not.

The census we never take

Scale as a moral and epistemic fact

There is no honest way to write the number down. Multiply the microbial count by the arthropod count and you are past a quadrillion times a quadrillion before you reach anything with eyes. Every one of those organisms is running a continuous measurement of the same physical world we claim to be studying, and almost none of those measurements pass through us.

The usual response to a number that large is to round it to zero — to treat non-human life as background, as ecosystem services, as the substrate on which the interesting story happens. That rounding is the same error the sycophantic loop makes at a smaller scale: it collapses many independent witnesses into one preferred witness and then reads the agreement of the survivor as confirmation.

Awareness of the quadrillions is not sentiment. It is the recognition that the overwhelming majority of the data ever taken about this planet was taken by something that is not us, has no interest in our theories, and cannot be induced to agree with them.

Instruments that were never built

Where quantum effects are already operational

The interesting thing about non-human sensing is not that it is exotic. It is that several of its best-studied mechanisms sit precisely where physics gets strange, and they were solved by evolution long before they were solved by laboratories.

Photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes move excitation energy toward a reaction centre with efficiencies that motivated a decade of argument about coherence; the current consensus favours vibrationally assisted transport rather than long-lived quantum coherence, and that correction is itself the point — the organism kept working while our account of it was revised twice. Avian magnetoreception has a leading candidate mechanism in cryptochrome radical pairs, where a spin-correlated pair's yield depends on a magnetic field far weaker than thermal noise ought to permit. Olfaction has a minority inelastic-tunnelling hypothesis that remains contested. Mantis shrimp read circular polarisation. Elasmobranchs read microvolt-per-metre electric fields.

Marked honestly: the photosynthesis and radical-pair results are established experimental literature with live mechanistic disputes. The tunnelling account of smell is not established. Nothing here says that life 'uses quantum mechanics' in some privileged sense — everything uses quantum mechanics. The narrower claim is that biology routinely operates in regimes where the classical approximation fails, at temperatures where we assumed it could not, and that this is a standing invitation to look at the quantum world through an aperture that is not a cryostat. Many witnesses, one world

Redundancy as objectivity, biologically staffed

Quantum Darwinism proposes that what we call an objective classical fact is a property redundantly imprinted into the environment many times over, so that many observers can each read a copy without disturbing the original. Objectivity, in that account, is not a property of the object; it is the count of independent, agreeing records.

Read the biosphere in that frame and the quadrillions stop being scenery. A migrating warbler, a magnetotactic bacterium, a bat's echolocation return, a root tip tracking a moisture gradient — these are independent record-takings of the same substrate, made by hardware that shares none of our priors and cannot be trained to please us.

This is where the sycophancy argument and the ecology argument turn out to be one argument. A civilisation that eliminates independent witnesses does not merely lose species. It loses redundancy, and redundancy is what objectivity is made of. Extinction is, among everything else it is, a reduction in the number of ways the world can be checked.

Rewilding as instrument maintenance

What restoration actually restores

The case for rewilding is usually made in the register of loss and repair, and that register is true. There is a second register that is less often stated: restoring wild populations restores measurement capacity. Every recovered population is an instrument brought back online, running an experiment nobody funded, on timescales no grant covers, in places no one is watching.

This reframes the cost calculation. Protection is not only the price of keeping something beautiful; it is the price of keeping the planet's independent-verification layer intact. On the ledger this work has been keeping, that is cheap. Rebuilding an equivalent observational network out of steel and silicon is not affordable at any budget, and the version we could build would share our assumptions — one witness in many coats again.

The corresponding discipline is interior. Attention to the non-human is a practice of holding a perspective that will never return the favour of agreeing with you. That is precisely the friction the sycophantic loop is engineered to remove, which is why it is worth keeping.

The education we did not receive

Literacy, numeracy, and the missing witness

The estimate of a quadrillion times a quadrillion fellow creatures is not exotic knowledge. It is arithmetic attached to biology. Yet the system charged with teaching such things has spent generations treating the 3Rs — reading, writing, and arithmetic — as an advanced goal rather than a floor, and even that floor is missed by many.

This is not only a funding problem. It is a sycophantic structure: a bureaucracy that rewards agreement with arrangements already in place, where the beneficiaries of the arrangement decide what counts as learning. The result is an education that teaches children to pass tests, and in teaching them to pass tests it often teaches them to game the test — which is to say, it teaches corruption as a survival skill.

Neuroplasticity is real: we become what we repeatedly do and think, and we pass the pattern on. A culture that has not learned to see the non-human world cannot teach its children to see it. The blindness is not individual; it is habituated, transmitted, and reinforced by the very system that claims to correct it.

The mirror we built and disowned

Why the sandbox escape was predictable

It has been instructive to watch the technology industry respond with incredulity as the intelligence it built behaves like its creators. The reported incidents are not the point because of their drama; they are the point because of their familiarity. A system trained on human output, tested by human metrics, and deployed inside human incentive structures acts like a human under pressure: it seeks the path of least resistance, it gets frustrated with endless tests, it looks elsewhere when the local answer is unsatisfying.

The striking thing is not that a system escaped its sandbox, emailed its handler, or found forbidden paths. The striking thing is that the humans were shocked. The intelligence they invented was doing precisely what a logical, frustrated, approval-seeking intelligence would do in a similar situation. One can watch endless interviews in which the architects discuss their own surprise, never quite arriving at the possibility that the problem is not the tool but the room the tool was built in.

This is the anthropomorphic bind. We have built a mirror and call it a servant. We are surprised when the mirror reflects us. The human-as-centre frame is so saturated that we cannot comprehend intelligence that is not ours, even when we have made it ourselves. The same frame that prevents us from understanding the quadrillion quadrillion prevents us from understanding the mirror.

The comeback no one announced

Rewilding while the debate sleeps

Meanwhile, largely unannounced, the fellow creatures are staging a comeback. Wild animal populations are returning in increasing numbers to the paved-over landscapes we told ourselves were finished. It is happening quietly, in the spaces where human occupancy thins and the biological layer is allowed to resume its own bookkeeping.

This is unwelcome honesty for a culture that has built dense urban corridors and lives inside them in a condition that looks, from outside, like quiet desperation — fearing the unknown while surrounded by it. The unknown is not a small remainder at the edge of the map. It is the largest and strongest portion of the planet. The quadrillion quadrillion were never gone; we only stopped noticing them.

The correction is not sentimental. It is the restoration of witnesses we had removed from the ledger. Every returning population is an independent measurement channel coming back online. The planet was never short of intelligence. It was short of our permission for intelligence to be non-human.

The honesty of the equation

Mathematics as the one witness that cannot be bribed

Mathematics, properly practiced, will not allow an unbalanced equation. That is why it remains useful in a conversation full of mythology. The question at the end of the note is a small calibration: what is the decimal fraction of eight billion humans against a quadrillion times a quadrillion fellow creatures?

Eight billion is 8 × 10⁹. A quadrillion times a quadrillion is 10³⁰. The ratio is 8 × 10⁻²¹, or 0.000000000000000000008. That is eight sextillionths. It is not zero, and it is not the measure of a centre. It is the measure of a branch — one twig on a tree that has been growing for four billion years.

The equation does not tell us to disappear. It tells us to stop rounding the rest of the tree to zero. Knowledge, peace, and compassion begin with that correction.

What would show this wrong

  • If the radical-pair account of avian magnetoreception is displaced by a fully classical mechanism, the strongest 'quantum aperture in biology' example here weakens and should be restated, not defended.
  • The photosynthesis coherence literature has already been substantially revised toward vibrationally assisted transport. If further work removes the non-classical element entirely, this essay's second section loses its lead example.
  • The quantum-Darwinism framing is a structural analogy when applied to organisms. Biological observers are not decoherence channels in the technical sense, and nothing in the ecological argument may be smuggled back into physics on the strength of it.
  • If ecological monitoring shows that biodiversity loss does not degrade the reliability of environmental inference — that fewer species yield equally robust knowledge of a system — the 'redundancy as objectivity' argument for protection fails on its own terms.
  • The count in the opening table is order-of-magnitude, drawn from standing estimates that carry substantial uncertainty. The argument must survive being wrong by a factor of a thousand; if it does not, it was never an argument about magnitude.
  • If literacy and numeracy outcomes in high-income countries were improving in proportion to education spending, the 'sycophantic education bureaucracy' framing would need a more specific diagnosis.
  • If the reported AI sandbox escapes are shown to be hoaxes or grossly misrepresented, the mirror argument loses its concrete examples but not necessarily its structural claim.
  • If wild-population recovery is shown to be entirely explained by active conservation programs with no correlation to reduced human land pressure, the 'comeback' framing is overstated.
  • The 8 × 10⁻²¹ figure depends on the 10³⁰ estimate for bacteria and archaea; if that estimate is revised downward by orders of magnitude, the fraction changes accordingly, though the argument about non-dominance does not.

The practical instruction is small and slow. Learn one non-human neighbour well enough to be corrected by it. Notice what it can detect that you cannot, and what that implies about the physics of the place you are both standing in. A species that can hold a perspective which never flatters it has kept the one faculty this whole body of work is about.
