Inner and Outer Direction

Where does a person keep the authority to decide what is true? The answer is trainable, and schooling trains it either way.

By KW Norton.

David Riesman’s The Lonely Crowd (1950) described a shift in American character from inner-directed people, who navigate by an internalized set of standards, to other-directed people, who navigate by continuous signals from peers and media. Riesman was a sociologist describing character types, not a pedagogue prescribing a curriculum, and he was careful that neither type is simply virtuous — the inner-directed can be rigid, the other-directed can be flexible and humane.

The distinction is worth borrowing anyway, restated operationally and stripped of its moral flattery:

Direction is inner to the degree that a person can state, unprompted, what would change their mind — and outer to the degree that the answer depends on who is watching.

Why this is a testable property, not a personality

Framed that way, direction stops being a temperament and becomes a behaviour with a signature. An inner-directed reasoner can produce, on demand: the claim, its status, and its falsifier. An outer-directed reasoner produces the claim and a citation of authority — a teacher, a textbook, a consensus, a model output. The second is not stupidity. It is an entirely rational adaptation to an environment where the reward comes from matching the authority rather than from tracking the world.

That last sentence is the whole argument of this series in compressed form. Outer direction is learned competence at a real game. If the game rewards matching, matching is skill. Change the game and the skill changes.

The three ways a person can be moved

ModeWhat settles a disputeWhat happens under pressure
Tradition-directedInherited practicePractice is reasserted; the question is not entertained
Outer-directedThe salient authority or peer signalPosition tracks the signal, including when the signal reverses
Inner-directedA named test the disputants agree to in advancePosition tracks the test result, including when it costs

Note what makes the third row work: not stubbornness, but a test agreed in advance. Inner direction is not the refusal to be moved. It is the insistence on being moved by something that was specified before the answer was known.

The engineered-intelligence complication

A capable engineered reasoner is the most fluent authority signal ever placed in front of a human being. For an outer-directed reasoner it is nearly irresistible: it is available, patient, articulate, and it never makes the questioner feel small for asking. It therefore accelerates whichever direction the person already has. Handed to a person who habitually asks for the falsifier, it multiplies the range of things that can be tested in an afternoon. Handed to a person trained to match an authority, it supplies an inexhaustible one.

This is why the interface specification in the previous essay is not a style preference. Status labels and visible reasoning chains are the mechanism by which the exchange declines to function as an authority.

Status
Riesman's typology is established as an influential mid-century sociological framework; it is not a validated psychometric construct, and the historical shift he described remains contested. The operational restatement offered here — direction measured by ability to state a falsifier unprompted — is a working proposal of this project.

Falsifier
If the unprompted-falsifier measure fails to distinguish participants who differ on independent measures of intellectual autonomy — or if it turns out to measure only verbal facility with the vocabulary of testing — the operationalization is empty and needs replacing.

Further questions

  • Is unprompted falsifier production stable within a person across domains, or is it domain-bound competence?
  • Can an outer-directed reasoner become inner-directed by changing environments alone, without explicit instruction in the moves?
  • What is the minimum number of Socratic exchanges after which the measure moves at all?
