Gut Feelings and the Future
Four separable claims, sorted by what actually holds them up.

A popular post proposes that consciousness may jump through time, and that what we call a gut feeling is a memory echoing back from the future. The reply this essay comes from added a physiological candidate: microtubules, as far as anyone knows the one structure in the body with a plausible claim to receiving quantum information.
That exchange bundles four claims that stand or fall separately. Keeping them separate is the whole exercise — the popular framing works precisely because it fuses them, so that the weakest claim borrows credibility from the strongest.
1. The measured effect
Presentiment studies report physiological changes — skin conductance, pupil dilation, heart rate — that appear a few seconds before a randomly selected emotional stimulus is displayed. The literature associated with Julia Mossbridge, Dean Radin and colleagues includes meta-analyses reporting small but non-zero effects across pooled datasets.
Status: contested empirical claim. The effects are small, replication is uneven, and the standing objections are ordinary rather than exotic — expectation effects, subtle cueing from the randomisation hardware, analysis-window choices, and publication asymmetry. Falsifier: pre-registered, adversarially designed replications with fixed analysis windows returning null across independent labs.
2. The retrocausal interpretation
The step from "a physiological signal precedes the stimulus" to "information travelled backward in time" is an interpretation, not a measurement. Retrocausality and entanglement-with-a-future-self are invoked as mechanisms, but no version of either currently yields a quantitative prediction the presentiment data could confirm or refute.
Status: speculative bridge, not established physics. Standard quantum mechanics is no-signalling: correlations across a spacelike or timelike separation cannot carry usable information on their own, which is the same constraint developed at length in The Continuous Fabric. A mechanism that lets a gut feeling read the future owes an account of why it does not also let a laboratory send a message.
3. Microtubules as a quantum substrate
The microtubule proposal is the Penrose–Hameroff Orch-OR model: quantum-coherent processes among tubulin dimers, orchestrated within the lattice, with objective reduction events tied to moments of conscious experience. Proponents point to measured microtubule resonances, anaesthetic binding to those structures, and more recent supportive data. Critics point at the warm, wet, ion-dense environment and the decoherence times it implies, and at the absence of a decisive prediction that has survived a fair test.
Status: live but unconfirmed hypothesis; see Quantum Dynamics of Tubulin and The Warm Quantum Brain for the coherence-time problem in detail. Note the load-bearing point: even a fully vindicated Orch-OR would give the brain access to quantum processes in the present. It would not, on its own, supply access to the future. Claim 3 does not entail claim 2.
4. The popular amplification
"Your consciousness may be able to jump through time" is not a summary of claims 1 through 3. It is a headline built by deleting every status label. The deletion is what makes it shareable, and it is also what makes it useless as a starting point for anyone who wants to know whether the underlying work is any good.
What is left standing
A cheaper explanation covers most of the phenomenology without any of this. Gut feelings are largely fast pattern completion running below report threshold: the body reacts to a regularity the narrating self has not yet articulated, and the felt sense of foreknowledge is the lag between those two systems. That account is boring, well supported, and predicts the same subjective experience. It should be the null hypothesis any retrocausal reading has to beat.
What survives the sort is a narrower and more interesting question than the headline: whether the anticipatory physiological signal is real at all, and if it is, whether it can be produced on demand under conditions where cueing and analysis freedom are closed off. Everything downstream — substrate, mechanism, cosmology — waits on that.
This is the director role in its ordinary working form. The material arrives already fused, and it will stay fused unless a human separates the data from the model, the model from the amplification, and all three from the remaining unknowns. No amount of model capability performs that separation on its own, because the fused version is the more fluent one.
