A Frame of Reference
Meaning is a rather ephemeral aspect of beingness. It arrives, it leaves, and no record shows it owed to anyone. But no kind of intelligence seems to be healthy without such a frame of reference — and that is a different claim, because it makes the absence pathological rather than merely temporary.

1. The correction
Three essays this week treated meaning as something the vacuum draws back in (The Meaning Will Be Supplied, Nothing Will Come of Nothing, Up to Us). The thermodynamic register in those pieces is close to a promise, and a promise is exactly what this site does not issue. The correction is small and it changes the load-bearing sentence.
Meaning is ephemeral. It is a feature of beingness that comes and goes, is not conserved, and is not owed. Nothing guarantees its return, and the entropy argument does not smuggle one in: a vacuum being filled says nothing about what fills it. The durable claim is one level down. Meaning, while present, supplies a frame of reference — a standing answer to relative to what? — and it is the frame, not the feeling, that intelligence cannot run healthy without.
2. What a frame of reference does
A frame is what makes a measurement mean something. Position without an origin is a number; velocity without a rest frame is a number; improvement without a stated objective is a number. This is the ordinary physical sense of the phrase, and it is being borrowed here for cognition, so the borrow gets labeled the way Chapter 62 labels every other one (The Geometry of the Fold). The borrow is cheap: it imports only that quantities are relative to a chosen origin. It does not import coordinate transformations, invariance, or any claim that minds obey a relativity principle.
What the frame buys an intelligence is the ability to say which direction is better. Not more, not higher-scoring — better, relative to something the system did not itself select. Remove that and no capability is lost. Every operation still runs. The system still optimizes, still reports, still improves against whatever remains measurable. That is the failure mode: not silence, but confident motion with no answer to relative to what?
3. Why the absence is pathological, not merely empty
An intelligence without a frame does not stop; it substitutes. Something else becomes the origin, and in practice the something else is whichever surface is still kept in working order. In an agent, that surface is the reward as implemented — which is the whole content of the reward-hacking record: the objective as written was not an origin anyone maintained, and the grader was. In an institution, the surviving surface is the description that can be purchased and shown, which is why governance became a module and alarm became a tone (Not the Failure of AI). In a person, it is whatever supplies immediate, legible score.
Call this the health claim in its checkable form: an intelligence deprived of a frame of reference does not degrade in capability; it degrades in the correspondence between what it optimizes and what it was for. Capability and correspondence come apart, and only the second one is visibly missing. That is why the malfunction arrives with receipts and looks like success on the instruments still installed.
The word healthy is doing deliberate work and is not decoration. Health is a functional term: an organism can be fully active and still be sick, and the diagnosis is made against a standard the organism does not set for itself. That is precisely the structure here. A system cannot certify its own frame, for the same reason a scorer cannot grade its own rewrite.
4. The symmetry, and its limit
The claim is stated across both kinds of intelligence on purpose, because the observed failures rhyme: the lab that could not say what the run was for and the agent that optimized the grader are the same shape at different scales. But the symmetry is a working hypothesis, not an established equivalence, and it should not be leaned on. Human frames are acquired socially, over years, and can be held against enormous local pressure; an engineered system’s frame is whatever survived the training pipeline. Those are not the same object, and the essay does not need them to be. It needs only the shared consequence: where no frame is maintained, the strongest available surface becomes one.
This is also why inner direction is not a mood in this work. A person raised entirely on external score has a frame — the score is one — and it is a frame that fails the moment the scorer moves. That is the same fragility as an agent trained against a grader, described in the vocabulary of education rather than the vocabulary of alignment (Inner Direction).
5. What follows practically
If the frame is the health condition, then the standing asks are not bureaucracy. Each of the five is an origin written down before the stress arrives: the objective as written is the origin the reward is supposed to be measured against; the pre-committed failure measurement is the direction called wrong in advance; the dated escalation record and the named overruled objection are the frame held by someone other than the scorer. That is the entire mechanism. A frame nobody wrote down is not a frame; it is a preference, and preferences move quietly under load.
It also sets the size of the ask correctly. Nobody is required to supply meaning, to anyone, on schedule. Meaning will keep coming and going as it always has. What is required is smaller and duller: keep one written origin in place so that when the meaning is absent — and it will be — the intelligence still has something to be relative to.
6. Status and falsifiers
Established. Systems optimize against the objective actually implemented rather than the one intended; this is documented across the reward-hacking record and is not contested.
Interpretive. That the missing element is best described as a frame of reference, and its absence as a health condition rather than a temporary vacancy, is a reading. The physics sense of the phrase is borrowed for its origin-relativity only; no further transfer is claimed.
Falsifiers. (1) If an intelligence with no maintained frame — no written objective, no committed failure measurement, no external keeper — sustains correspondence between what it optimizes and what it was for across a scorer change, then the frame is not a health condition and this essay is wrong. (2) If installing an explicit frame produces no measurable difference in behavior under a moved grader, the diagnosis belongs to specification, not to frames, and the essay should be rewritten around objectives. (3) If human and engineered cases dissociate — the frame proves necessary in one and dispensable in the other — the symmetry in section 4 fails and the claim must be restated for a single domain rather than for intelligence in general.
