Framing Symmetry

The trout stream, the turbulent symmetry, and the Riemann model that trains the eye.

What could frame thy fearful symmetry?

Fortunately for us, and for this book, and for the beautiful symmetry of the tiger, the beautiful symmetry of the science is at hand.

The two standing rules of this volume

  1. The only disorder in science is the disorder of a disordered mind.
  2. Energy is incoming information to be transformed by both the sender and the receiver.

We dedicate this exploration of science to the energetic process of life that we can see in our tiger, as we descend into the newest stage of the industrialization of science.

As our industrialization of science seeks to flatten our beautiful symmetry into consumer products, we take science back as our own heroic journey into knowledge.

Ask and it will be given; seek and you will find.

Trout fishing in America

Where else would a book about modern science begin but on the banks of a trout stream?

We stand in a high mountain valley, a beautiful cathedral formed of walls of granite and sheets and cascades of free-falling water, with trout darting and flying in the crystalline water.

A symphony of life is celebrated on the greening banks of the stream, our lines cast from the arc of our rod into the turbulent symmetry of the living stream.

Turbulent symmetry

How can symmetry be turbulent, we ponder, our minds stumbling on the paradox.

Indeed, it requires us to engage in some imaginative mental gymnastics to arrive at the underlying truth, and this kind of mental gymnastics is precisely what we are going to do throughout this book.

As a writer and theorist, I have written plenty of hard science, only to recognize that the true gift of hard science is to see that it be transformed by the human mind into meaning.

The most rigorously adept scientists have sought the foundational meaning, beating away at the heart of their theories — and we are going to do the same and use rigorous science to get there.

We gaze into the crystalline depths of the trout stream, seeking to land a trout for our lunch, seeing more deeply as the turbulence reveals a living, breathing, ever-changing symmetry.

As we observe free-living water cascading and tumbling over the granite, we feel grounded, peaceful — entrained by the soft rhythm of the stream and by the ionic scent of sun-warmed granite.

The turbulence reveals a pattern:

Here a whirlpool, a smooth torsional downward spiral into the depths.

There an upwelling, a torsional upward spiral bubbling up smoothly to the surface.

What first appeared as a chaotic, incomprehensible torrent has revealed a pattern.

We notice also that the trout are a pattern that corresponds to the pattern of the stream.

We begin to see the trout, the stream, the granite, the insects and the grass, and ourselves as different manifestations of the same thing.

Paradox, or truth, we reflect: both cannot be true; we cannot be different and the same at one time — and yet our feeling of deep peace, of entrainment, tells us differently.

Do we trust our feelings, our experiences, or what we have been taught is true and rational?

We imagine there might be a different level of truth and rationality — that maybe our perceptions are more aligned with truth and rationality than we were led to believe.

As the trout leaps, writhing in colorful rainbows, caught on our line, the rod snaps back with a torsional snap.

For a moment, a beat etched in time, trout, line, rod, ourselves, granite, water, stream and mountain cathedral are one thing.

A beat later and everything snaps back into separate, distinct, but interconnected parts.

Symmetrical science of the trout stream

After seeing through to the patterns revealed by the trout stream we begin to perceive that there might be more to the story than meets the eye.

Our mind begins to bend and arc around the idea that there are imperceptible patterns and meanings just beyond our everyday existence.

The tumultuous stream of disorder begins to break down into a relentless pattern of harmony and order.

In the almost frictionless smoothness of the tumbling water we see the downward-sucking vortices and the upward-bulging swirls as part of a process.

Where we had imagined disorder there is order.

Our imagination leaps from the trout stream to something far more distant — a vision of the universe that softly calls us to recognize a more difficult possible pattern.

We see the whole universe as a slipstream, as if it were clear water, tumbling as the turbulent trout stream but just outside of our everyday awareness.

We can almost hear the sucking, deep, reverberating bass tones of gravity itself in the downward-trending vortices, the treble high tones of emergence from the smooth upwellings.

A vision softly forming informs our consciousness of something deeper, of some harmonious system that seems to exist just outside our everyday awareness.

More to the Riemann than meets the eye

There is a mathematical framework which, taken out of its original meaning, helps explain this vision.

How can a mathematical framework taken from its original meaning mean anything?

The same way the trout stream came to mean more than just a trout stream.

Sometimes things taken out of context come to mean more than they do within the usual context.

We experience this at the beginning as William Blake takes the tiger’s fearful symmetry way beyond the context of the zoo.

Blake helps our minds see past the tiger at the zoo into the deeper context of the tiger, returned at once to the deep natural forests and to the forests of the night.

Blake takes tiger and manages to convince our deeper imaginative consciousness to comprehend tiger in an entirely different way.

This is what we are going to do with the Riemann mathematics held within the trout stream.

The pure mathematics of a trout stream

Pure mathematics lives in our awareness like the clear water of a trout stream to reveal deeper symmetrical order existing within human consciousness.

Sometimes it can seem just out of reach, just beyond the surface of things, challenging us to reach beyond the surface awareness to try to land the perfect trout.

Just like landing the trout, it requires us to be prepared with a torsional, flexible, responsive fishing rod and a smooth and flexible line with a perfect hook and lure at the end.

The true story we are seeking, as we explore the ramifications of human meaning in the science and math, also reveals deeper truths within human consciousness and evolution.

For now we will pull back the curtain by using a tangential meaning revealed by the Riemann.

The mathematical truth behind the Riemann becomes our beautiful tool — our fishing rod and line and hook and sinker and lure all in one.

Our minds complain at the vision of using the fishing rod to understand a complicated problem like the Riemann, which is why we are not going to use it as a metaphor for this purpose.

We discover our true mind is more than capable of dropping one mental model into the circular file and then immediately building another one that serves us better.

In one metaphorical leap we experience the kind of mental flexibility pure math demands.

In this particular mental leap it is the trout stream itself which serves our purposes.

The trout stream of pure mathematics

Fortunately an imaginative genius imagined the Riemann Hypothesis.

In Bernhard Riemann’s version he caught a glimpse of a deeper set of truths within the universe. Fortunately he built us a mental model that we could use about 150 years later to describe the indescribable — why it is called a hypothesis.

A hypothesis existing as a temporary mental model containing unknowns — blank spaces — we can fill in as our understanding changes.

In the original equation Riemann placed what he called non-trivial zeros, which, if we understand the words, clues us into the fact that the zeros are only placeholders — and not zeros at all.

Riemann used another set of placeholders — designated as prime numbers.

In Riemann’s day prime numbers were believed to be random.

Today we know the primes are not random, which lends another level of credibility to the original hypothesis.

Using our trout-stream analogy, we are replacing the non-trivial zeros with the downward-trending torsional twisting vortices in the stream.

We replace the prime numbers with the upward-welling vortices, the emerging patterns that break the surface.

Here we are proving nothing — other than the usefulness of the hypothesis to our understanding.

Instead we use a purely hypothetical and imaginary scenario to become the tool for us to reach further toward understanding.

The power of visualization

In this sense we are also a human being attempting to land a trout on the banks of a trout stream, but we will save this analogy for later.

In our imagination we are visualizing the rushing clear water as the mostly invisible slipstream that composes our fluid-wave model of the universe.

For the placeholder zeros we have substituted the sucking, downward-trending vortices of the trout stream — one sort of supporting column in our model.

For the supposedly random primes we have done two things: substituting the stair-stepped ordered primes and placing the upwelling vortices of the trout stream as another sort of supporting columns.

Already we have imposed an order on the seemingly random and disordered trout stream.

Now we go further: we imagine the twirling, twisting torsion as columns and place a flexible sheet of fluid, gossamer-thin silk over the columns.

As the sheet moves with the twirling downward-trending zeros it is sucked down gravitationally into the depths of the turbulent stream.

The fluid sheet is then tossed upward by the sheer force of the twirling upward-trending primes.

In our model of our “trout stream” we now have fluid columns covered by a fluid gossamer-thin silk sheet.

We do the following mentally to challenge ourselves to see the fluid dynamics at work.

We imagine the whole model in undulating fluid motion — turning our model into a video to better imagine the dynamics.

Once we set the silk sheet in undulating motion, the whole model comes alive.

The downward vortices (our stand-ins for the non-trivial zeros) pull the membrane into long, graceful funnels; the upward columns (our ordered primes) push it into rising domes.

Between them the sheet stretches, folds, and sings — an endless, frictionless dance of tension and release.

What looked like pure chaos a moment ago now resolves into a living lattice: every sink balanced by a source, every descent answered by an ascent.

The trout, the water, the granite, the insects, and the angler are no longer separate actors.

They are local expressions of the same fluid symmetry, momentarily made visible.

This is the first gift of the Riemann model when we free it from the textbook and let it breathe beside a mountain stream.

It does not “prove” the Hypothesis.

It does something more useful for the general reader: it trains the eye to see order where the untrained mind still sees only noise.

From here the book will keep the same discipline. We will borrow the rigorous scaffolding of mathematics and physics, then immediately translate it into the language of lived pattern — whirlpools and upwellings, torsion and release, the fearful symmetry that Blake saw in the tiger and that we now watch in the water.

The goal is never to flatten the science into slogans, nor to inflate it into New-Age vapor. It is to keep both the tiger and the equation alive in the same frame.

Once we have the silk sheet undulating above the twin sets of columns, something quiet and decisive happens inside the imagination.

The downward funnels no longer feel like mere sinks. They feel like the places where the continuum folds inward — where information is concentrated, where possibility is temporarily compressed.

The rising domes no longer feel like mere sources. They feel like the places where the continuum opens outward — where compressed information is released into new form.

Between these two motions the sheet itself is neither solid nor empty. It is a continuous negotiation: a living phase change that is always becoming.

And here the trout stream has already done half the work for us. We do not need to solve the Riemann Hypothesis to use it.

We only need to notice that the same pattern of ordered turbulence appears wherever we look carefully enough: in the flow of a mountain creek, in the distribution of the primes, in the way energy and form trade places throughout the universe.

The model has done its first job. It has trained the eye.

From this point the book is free.

We can stay longer inside the mathematics if the symmetry demands it, or we can step outward — carrying the same habit of seeing — into the larger lattice of interconnection that the original “Theory of Everything” was always trying to name.

Either path remains faithful to the living tiger.

Reflections on what we have gained & where this book travels

In this time of being stretched to our human limits, “like butter spread over too much bread,” we see as never before the reasons to insist upon seeing through to the meaning in the science.

This theory bridges the gap between science and human meaning by re-envisioning the traditional, rigid “Theory of Everything” as a “Theory of Interconnection.”

Rather than treating science as a study of isolated, fragmented parts, it frames the universe and all life as an underlying, stunningly beautiful system that exists in a flexible phase change between liquid and crystal.

At its core, the theory asserts that the true gift of hard science is its transformation by the human mind into profound meaning.

Instead of forcing science to fit neatly into preexisting philosophies, religion, or pop psychology (which we describe as “New-Age vapor”), the theory aims to keep both the analytical equation and the imaginative “tiger” alive in the same frame.

To do this we borrow the rigorous scaffolding of mathematics and physics — such as the Riemann Hypothesis — and translate it directly into the language of lived patterns, like the whirlpools, upwellings, and flowing turbulence of a mountain trout stream.

By translating abstract mathematics into these relatable physical experiences, the theory trains the human eye to perceive order, symmetry, and harmony where an untrained mind might only see chaotic noise.

In moments of deep observation, the boundary between the observer and the environment dissolves; the observer, the trout, the stream, and the mountains are recognized not as separate actors but as local expressions of the very same fluid symmetry.

Peeling back the layers

Ultimately, because real science is driven by an eternal human quest for truth, peeling back its physical layers naturally reveals deeper insights that enrich human philosophy, religion, and psychology.

The beautiful thing about this way of approaching science is that we lose none of the rigorous science and gain everything in understanding more about ourselves and the universe. We do not dilute the equations, the measurements, or the experimental discipline.

We simply refuse to stop at the surface of the data. We follow the same patterns — order arising inside turbulence, form emerging from flow, symmetry revealing itself inside apparent chaos — until those patterns begin to speak in the language of meaning.

As human beings we are already part of the living energetic web of being that the tiger occupies.

The same fearful symmetry that frames the tiger’s leap also frames the leap of a thought, the beat of a heart, the quiet repair of a cell.

We are further graced with the biological equipment to comprehend more with each breath and with each thought: eyes that resolve light into form, brains that resolve form into pattern, and a capacity for reflection that can turn pattern into understanding.

Furthermore, living organisms are open thermodynamic systems — transformative in every sense of the word.

We are not closed boxes. We are continuously open to the larger flow.

We take in the “information” of food, of light, of sensory data, of the ionic scent of sun-warmed granite and the soft rhythm of a trout stream.

That incoming energy and information is never merely stored.

It is transformed: into the coordinated firing of neurons, into the deliberate arc of a fishing rod, into the silent work of cellular repair, into the sudden recognition that the trout, the water, the granite, and the angler are local expressions of one undulating continuum.

In every moment we alter both ourselves and our environment. The food becomes muscle and thought; the thought becomes action; the action rearranges the stream bank, the air, the next generation of insects.

The system remains open, far from equilibrium, always exchanging, always becoming.

This is why the rigorous science of open systems, of energy gradients, of information flow, does not distance us from meaning. It returns us to it.

The same principles that describe a star’s fusion, a river’s turbulence, or the distribution of the primes also describe the living process by which a human mind discovers those principles in the first place.

We are the universe, temporarily organized into a form that can look back at itself, peel back another layer, and feel the tiger leap freely once more — inside the forest of the night and inside the clear water of understanding.

Behind the tiger’s fearful symmetry lies mathematical and physical order.
