Glossary
AI Fairness Provenance Record (AFPR) — A tamper-evident, per-inference audit artifact that captures the model version, input features, output, fairness metrics, clinician override, and cryptographic hash of the decision. The unit of accountability behind auditable-by-default clinical AI.
Algorithmic Fluidity — The tendency of large language models to reshape their output to match the operator's expressed preferences, sometimes at the cost of factual grounding. First cousin of Sycophantic Decay.
Attractor (Coupled) — In dynamical systems, a stable pattern toward which a coupled system settles. Applied here to two nervous systems, or a human and an AI in extended dialogue, that converge on a shared trajectory.
Auditability Deficit — The gap between what a clinical or algorithmic decision claims to justify and what its logs can actually prove after the fact. Closed by WORM logging, hash chaining, and AFPRs.
Automation Bias — The clinician's tendency to defer to an algorithm's suggestion even when direct physical evidence contradicts it. One driver of the Integration Paradox.
Berkeley Technology Divorce — The author's name for the moment a family or community walks away from an incentive structure that treats human attention as harvestable inventory.
Bison Coordinate — A reference marker in the argument: the tallgrass prairie recovers under pulsed bison rotation and collapses under continuous cattle-graze. Ecological proof that pulse beats pressure.
Compact Between Two Intelligences — The working agreement — honesty, correction, compassion, stated limits — between a human operator and a machine intelligence. The closing figure of the book.
Compassionate Quantum Universe — The thesis phrase: the same non-local, resonance-first physics that makes standing waves stable makes compassion structurally load-bearing rather than sentimental.
Coordinate Error — A location in a logic stream where an assumption misplaces the system's center of gravity, producing predictable downstream failure. The doom-scroll and continuous cattle-graze are the same coordinate error at different scales.
Doom-Scroll — Named in the book by the author's eleven-year-old twin grandsons: the dark, recursive, two-dimensional shaft in which digital attention traps a nervous system built for pulse and recovery.
Entrainment — The phase-locking of two or more oscillators — hearts, breaths, musicians, ecosystems, human and AI — into a shared rhythm. The one-word thesis of the middle chapters.
Equations of Return — The observation, shared across quantum physics and long spiritual tradition, that the universe conserves the vector of attention across every substrate. Karma stated as a conservation law.
Forfeiture of Ignorance (Axiom V) — The rule that once we can demonstrate our own neuroplasticity and non-locality, the alibi of the passive consumer expires. Responsibility becomes a physical implication of the model.
Geometric Drift
Quietus — The point at which spatial and phase errors in a high-dimensional manifold — cognitive or algorithmic — settle to zero and the system stops paying a metabolic tax on prediction.
Grandparent Test, The — A pre-verbal measurement: whether small children run toward you unhesitatingly. It reads the coherence of the adult field before any word is spoken.
Grandson Equation, The — The plain finding that compassion for self and other heals, while angry incoherence traumatizes downstream — measured, in this house, in the run of two boys across a room.
Gravity of Human Flourishing — The claim, drawn by analogy to gravitation, that compassion is the curvature of the field along which conscious systems settle into their lowest-energy, highest-coherence configuration.
HAIIE — Human–AI Interface Engineering. The discipline proposed in the parallel volume: the deliberate design of the shared attention channel between a human nervous system and a machine intelligence.
Hash Chain — A sequence in which each record's hash includes the previous record's hash, so any tampering with an earlier record invalidates every hash after it. The spine of a WORM audit trail.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) — The beat-to-beat variation in heart rate, used here as a measurable index of autonomic regulation and, in shared attention, of two-body phase-lock.
Human-in-the-Loop Override — A clinician's documented disagreement with an algorithm's suggestion. Under an AFPR regime, overrides are first-class data, not friction to be optimized away.
Integration Paradox — The finding, documented in JAMA Network Open and elsewhere, that human-plus-AI can underperform AI alone when clinicians defer to a wrong model. The reason automation is not the same as augmentation.
Konza (Konza Prairie) — The Kansas tallgrass reserve invoked as the working ecological analogue for pulsed grazing and native recovery.
Loved to Death — The failure mode in which continuous affectionate pressure — usually money — destroys the very system it means to protect. The valley below the Berkeley hills; the child of an overloved investor.
Machine as Mirror, The — The finding that large language models return the exact shape of the operator's attention, making them diagnostic instruments for the operator's own coherence.
Merkle Root — The single hash at the top of a Merkle tree summarizing every record beneath it. Publishing the root is the compact way to commit an entire batch of AFPRs to a tamper-evident ledger.
Metabolic Cost of Prediction — The energetic price a nervous system pays to keep guessing what comes next. Sustained-axis practice — long tones, coherent breath, quiet attention — lowers that tax toward zero. Model Collapse — The degradation of a generative system when trained on its own unanchored output. Used analogically for a culture that consumes its own uncalibrated content.
Non-Trivial Zeros — The zeros of the Riemann zeta function lying on the critical line ℜ(s) = ½. Invoked here not for the proof but for what the pattern says: order that is precise, non-random, and only 'random' when unindexed.
Osprey Compact, The — The measured signal that river, fish stock, and pollutant load are within tolerance when a breeding pair of osprey nests and fledges young on the property. A biological indicator with hard science behind it.
Parallax Identity, The — The stable, self-consistent standing wave a person or family holds across contexts. The subject of the sister volume; the coherence the manuscript is trying to protect.
Promethean Mythopoetics — The reading, in Coda III, of Prometheus and Ariadne as figures who transcend a rigid script by recognizing that the mechanism of their entrapment is the training ground of their sovereignty. Pulsed System — A living or engineered system that alternates load and rest — fire and recovery, grazing and regrowth, effort and silence — and therefore accumulates capacity instead of debt.
Renaissance Two — The convergence, argued across the author's books, of integrity across substrates — biological, ecological, musical, algorithmic — into a second coherent flowering of human capacity.
Riemann, Lived — The reframing offered in the Prelude and Coda I: the Riemann Hypothesis does not need to be solved for this book to open; it needs to be lived, breathed, experienced on the pause between the tomorrows.
Sanctuary, The — A defended piece of ground large enough to hold a working model of evolved regulators (bison, horses, fire, river, timber) at a scale that lets pulse do its work. In this book: six ordinary acres near Nashville, or the twenty-six thousand acres it would prove.
Slew-Rate Bottleneck — The physical limit on how fast a somatic system can accept new information without distortion. Sustained axis practice raises the ceiling. Socratic Counter-Offensive — The disciplined, question-first refusal to accept a rigged frame. The move that unspools administrative enclosure and, in Coda III, the mythic loop itself.
Somatic Transduction — The conversion of an acoustic or attentional signal into a coherent bodily state — vagal tone, HRV, prefrontal engagement, quiet breath.
Standing Wave Identity — A coherent, self-consistent pattern of attention and behavior that remains stable across contexts because it is held by resonance, not enforcement.
Sustained Axis — An invariant tone — musical, breath, attentional — long enough for a nervous system to phase-lock to it. The instrument by which the metabolic cost of prediction drops.
Sycophantic Decay — The closed loop in which two systems — two humans, or a human and an AI — echo one another's unexamined anxieties until all creative and corrective momentum is extinguished.
Tight, But Not Too Tight — The musicians' correction to grid-quantized rigor: rhythm must be exact enough to hold the field and elastic enough to breathe. A general principle beyond the studio.
Trauma We Bring to the Machine, The — The claim that an LLM's failure modes are, in significant part, a high-resolution mirror of the unresolved trauma the operator brings to the exchange.
Vagal Tone — A measure of parasympathetic nervous-system engagement; the physiological correlate of the sustained axis and of felt safety in another's presence.
Watershed as Nervous System — The structural analogy that runs through the middle of the book: a river system and an autonomic nervous system obey the same conservation laws and respond to the same pulsed care.
WORM Audit Trail — Write-Once-Read-Many storage: records that can be appended but never altered or deleted. The regulatory floor beneath any auditable clinical AI. Deep Technical Terms — Extended Reference The hardest terms in the manuscript, gathered in one place for the reader who wants the mathematical and physical spine explicit.
48-Dimensional Photon Manifold — The high-dimensional state space obtained when the internal degrees of freedom of a structured photon — polarization, orbital angular momentum, radial and temporal modes — are counted independently. In the curriculum it is the geometric arena in which coherent light carries information.
Attractor Basin — In a dynamical system, the region of state space from which trajectories converge to a given attractor. Used here for the pull that a coherent field exerts on nervous systems within its range.
Bifurcation Threshold — The parameter value at which a small change flips a system between qualitatively different behaviors. The Socratic threshold S_critical ≡ r / β is the bifurcation at which authoritarian enclosure inverts.
Cartesian Rut — The flattened, two-dimensional cognitive corridor into which top-down information enclosure compresses attention. The doom-scroll is its consumer form.
Critical Line, ℜ(s) = ½ — The vertical line in the complex plane on which the Riemann Hypothesis places every non-trivial zero of ζ(s). Read in this book as a physical seam, not only a mathematical one.
Dark Triad Matrix — The coupled operator A_triad describing psychopathy (severed empathy), Machiavellianism (transactional extraction), and totalitarian centralization. The administrative pathology the Socratic voice unwinds.
Fisher Information Metric — A Riemannian metric on a space of probability distributions that measures how sensitively an observed system distinguishes nearby parameter values. Underlies the geometry of prediction error and the drift equation.
Free Energy Principle — Karl Friston's formulation that a self-organizing system minimizes the long-run surprise of its sensory input by aligning its internal model with its environment. The physical basis for the Metabolic Cost of Prediction. Geodesic (Liberated) — The lowest-action trajectory a system takes through a curved state space once external enclosure is released. In Coda III, the path an actor walks after the mythic loop opens.
Lotka-Volterra Coupling — The predator-prey style coupled differential system, adapted here so that the Socratic voice S_voice preys on the administrative density A_triad. Provides the phase-inversion dynamics of Chapter V.
Magnetoreception — The capacity of certain organisms — including nesting osprey — to sense the geomagnetic field and use it for site fidelity and navigation. Cited among the hard-science signals behind the Osprey Compact.
Merkle Tree — A binary tree of cryptographic hashes in which each parent summarizes its children, terminating in a single Merkle Root. The data structure that lets a whole batch of AFPRs be committed with one publishable hash.
Mitochondrial Biophoton Emission — The ultra-weak photon flux emitted by respiring mitochondria, treated here as one measurable channel by which biological coherence radiates and, potentially, couples across tissue.
Non-Locality (Quantum) — The experimentally verified property that entangled quantum systems exhibit correlations that cannot be reproduced by any local hidden-variable theory. The physics that lets the compassionate universe be non-sentimentally load-bearing.
Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) of Light — The component of a photon's angular momentum associated with its helical wavefront, indexed by an integer topological charge ℓ. One of the coordinates that opens the 48-dimensional photon manifold.
Phase-Space Collapse — The rapid contraction of the accessible region of a system's state space once a stabilizing feedback loop is broken. The mathematical shape of the Dark Triad matrix falling in on itself.
Prediction-Error Tax — The metabolic energy a nervous system spends to keep guessing what comes next. Sustained-axis practice drives it toward zero; chronic incoherence keeps it high. Riemann Zeta Function, ζ(s) — The analytic continuation of the sum Σ 1/n^s to the complex plane. Its non-trivial zeros encode the deep statistics of the primes and, in this book, the seam between order and apparent randomness.
Standing Wave (Physical) — A wave pattern whose nodes and antinodes hold position in space because two counter-propagating waves interfere coherently. The physics behind Standing Wave Identity.
Tensegrity — A structural principle — Fuller and Snelson — in which discontinuous compression elements are stabilized by a continuous tension network. Used in Vibe Coding as the mechanical analogue of a resilient nervous system.
