Part II — The Refill · Chapter Seven
The 1% Reinvents Itself: Feudalism → Medici → Techno-Feudalism
Premise
European feudalism, Renaissance banking, and twenty-first-century techno-feudalism are not three separate regimes. They are three compilations of a single source code: the elite one percent's standing project of lording over the ninety-nine. The medium changes — land, ledger, attention — the geometry holds.
Working outline
• Power abhors a vacuum. When the rigid land-tenure of medieval feudalism cracked open during Renaissance One, the hierarchy did not flatten. The opportunists who could read a balance sheet stepped into the space the lords had vacated.
• The Medici as hinge case. Bankers to the Vatican; financiers of mercenary war; sponsors of art that laundered the family name into civic immortality. Finance, force, and the sacred bound into a single instrument — a bureaucracy of business and banking cartels aligned with authoritarian governments and religious institutions to maintain an iron grip over the human soul.
• The Atlantic as scaling test. Columbus, Crown extraction, and the sistema de castas prove the machine is portable across oceans. (Handled in detail in the Columbus chapter; cross-reference here.)
• Renaissance Two: media, platforms, "new world order." The same geometry recompiled for the digital substrate — mass media, techno-feudalism, algorithmic governance, transnational platforms whose terms of service function as a new requerimiento.
• Failed refusals. Peasants' revolts, the Comuneros, the Diggers, the Paris Commune, twentieth-century labor, the open-web movement. Read not as discrete defeats but as one long, unbroken refusal that has not yet found its form.
• The question for the tribunal. Can the operating system be refused, or only re-skinned? What would it mean to break the cycle rather than rotate the dynasty?
Witnesses to call

• Machiavelli — read against himself, as the clerk who described the machine without endorsing it.
• The Medici account books, alongside the Sistine ceiling, as evidence that beauty and extraction can share a patron.
