Chapter 3 — All Music Is Steampunk: The Anachronism of Resonance

Status: In formation · placeholder

Every instrument is a brass-and-gut machine pretending to be older or younger than it is. The violin is a steampunk device: a Renaissance carapace housing a Baroque voice driven by a Romantic bow drawing on a Modernist string. Resonance is intrinsically anachronistic — it collapses centuries into a single sustained pitch.

This chapter argues that "steampunk" is not a 1980s subgenre but the native mode of every acoustic instrument: visible mechanism, audible craft, refusal to hide the joinery. The luminous scaffolding stays visible.

Forward proof sketch: any linear oscillator whose impulse response outlasts its excitation is, by definition, a memory device — it carries the past forward into the present. All resonators are time machines.

Keynote phrase: the brass is showing; that is the point.

Ouroboros hook: closes on the image of a single sustained note still ringing after the bow has left the string.
