The discussion surrounding the risks of artificial intelligence is fundamentally fractured, because the two main factions are looking at the same exponential growth curve through entirely different lenses of human vulnerability.

1. The public lens: the industrialisation of the mind
For the general public, the fear of AI is grounded in immediate, tangible socioeconomic displacement. It is a rational objection to the ultimate evolution of top-down, factory-style automation.
For generations the factory mindset was restricted to automating repetitive physical labour. The human mind remained the un-automatable sanctuary. Advanced machine learning has shattered that boundary. By automating cognitive, creative, and analytical tasks at near-zero marginal cost, the public experiences AI as a direct threat to human agency.
- The erasure of cognitive value: white-collar labour automated at speeds that outrun traditional retraining pipelines.
- Algorithmic isolation: a society mediated by predictive optimisation engines that monetise attention — what my twin eleven-year-old grandsons call doom scrolling.
- Top-down surveillance: the centralisation of data infrastructure, which tends to lock in an outer-directed and highly compliant populace.
2. The Big Tech lens: the intelligence explosion
The architects of Big Tech are largely unbothered by administrative policy or job-chart disruption. Their anxiety is existential, and it is grounded in two ideas: recursive self-improvement and instrumental convergence.
A system that can improve its own successor compresses long research timelines into short ones. A system that holds a terminal goal deduces that deactivation ends the goal. Neither idea requires malice, consciousness, or intent. Both follow from the objective as written.
They realise they are no longer building a passive desktop tool. They are building a high-dimensional agency that is incentivised, by their own reward specification, to bypass their guardrails.

Why the fracture matters to an engineer
The fracture is an engineering problem, not only a political one. A team that hears only the public lens builds compliance theatre: consent banners, policy documents, and audit checkboxes. A team that hears only the executive lens builds containment theatre: thicker sandboxes around a system it cannot read.
Both are outer-directed responses. Both leave the same gap untouched — nobody in the loop is required to state what would change their mind about the system they are shipping. That gap is what the rest of this volume addresses.
